The role
The post of Lecturer in Renewable Energy will primarily contribute to teaching fundamental engineering topics with specific applications to renewable energy technologies, plus more specialist modules in areas of expertise, on the undergraduate and postgraduate Renewable Energy Engineering programmes
The position will be based in the Renewable Energy Group led by Prof Xiaohong Li. The group is part of the Department of Engineering, led by Professor Ion Sucala ( Engineering currently has over 90 academic staff across our Exeter (Streatham) and Cornwall (Penryn) campuses. Academics in the Renewable Energy group are based in our Cornwall (Penryn) campus and have particular expertise in electrical & power systems engineering, energy policy, offshore wind technology, solar energy, and energy storage.
The department of Engineering has recently embarked on an ambitious strategy – Exeter Engineering 2030. Our vision is to harness the power of engineering and innovation to create a sustainable and healthier future. The strategy is underpinned by significant investment in staff and facilities, and it aims to build on our existing strengths and continue to develop emerging areas, contributing to the University’s Strategy 2030.
Main duties
1. Use appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods, supervise student projects and the academic elements of field trips, and, where appropriate, placements;
2. Identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement and contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and material;
3. Select appropriate assessment instruments and criteria, assess the work and progress of students by reference to the criteria and provide constructive feedback to students;
4. Set, mark and assess work and examinations and provide feedback to students;
5. Ensure that module design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the University and Faculty;
6. To contribute to the general operation of the Faculty as a member of its academic team.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the following qualities and characteristics:
1. A PhD or equivalent industry/education experience in mechanical engineering and its application in renewable energy technologies.
2. The aptitude to develop familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning.
3. Enthusiasm, knowledge, and ability to teach modules in core engineering, renewable energy-specific topics, and more widely, as required.
4. The ability and enthusiasm for supervising and supporting undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
5. The attitude and ability to engage in continuous professional development.
6. Teamwork skills to work in collaboration with existing members of the Engineering department, as well as colleagues in the wider Faculty.
7. An active and supportive approach to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary education that will help to foster interactions and links both within the University and externally with other educational bodies, professional institutions and industry.
