ABOUT HMP ROCHESTER
HMP Rochester is a Category C prison, holding approximately 950 adult male sentenced offenders across two sites. The main site of HMP Rochester is located on the site of the eponymous “borstal,” with many original structures remaining, including the recognisable clock tower and gate lodge. The prison marked its 150-year anniversary this year, commemorating its rich history as a young offenders’ institute and later as an adult-only establishment. It has seen numerous extensions over the years, making it one of the larger prisons in the area, with sprawling grounds and a wide range of facilities. Having recently merged with the smaller adjacent prison, formerly the youth justice facility known as Cookham Wood, Rochester has undergone an exciting period of expansion.
HMP Rochester’s focus is on reducing reoffending and preventing future victims of crime by preparing offenders for release through accredited intervention programmes, skill and vocational-based training, and education in a pro-social environment. Both sites offer numerous opportunities for offenders to engage in purposeful activity across many areas.
Courses at HMP Rochester include Maths, English, IT, catering, art, mentoring and training, construction skills, and much more. Prisoners are supported to gain qualifications and develop skills and knowledge that prepare them for a productive, crime-free life outside the establishment, with staff being an essential part of the journey.
The education delivery hours are Monday to Thursday 8:45 am – 11:30 am, 1:45 pm – 4:30 pm, and on Fridays 8:45 am – 11:30 am, with staff working on-site 8:15 am – 4:45 pm each day and 8:15 am – 1:15 pm on Fridays. Class sizes typically range from 8-12 learners.
Located a short distance from the M2 and M20, HMP Rochester stands proud on the hill with outstanding views over the North Downs and is surrounded by the beautiful Kent countryside. There is plentiful free on-site parking available to all staff, and on-site facilities include gyms and fitness classes, a library, and freshly made barista coffee.
