Over the past 12 months the George Eliot maternity service has received significant investment both for the estate which includes new theatres, the refurbishment of our inpatient ward and the relocation of triage and within the workforce in the form of new roles one of which being a perinatal mental health specialist midwife.
This newly created post is an opportunity to join our driven midwifery workforce, supporting the maternity team and being an integral part of our team.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of this role are fall under five headings. They are;
* Provide specialist midwifery expertise, ensuring all staff are supported in their practice on day to day and ongoing basis with particular emphasis on antenatal care.
Management
* To liaise with other ward/department managers and Lead Sonographer within the Directorate as necessary, to ensure workload and skill mix are effectively managed.
* Inform and discuss with senior midwife manager/supervisor of midwives any problems highlighted.
Education and Training
* To be a senior mentor and preceptor to junior midwives and student midwives, working closely with education providers.
Professional
* To be professionally accountable for ones own midwifery practice, acting in a professional manner at all times abiding by the Code of Conduct and all other relevant NMC and Trust practice protocols and guidelines.
Personal
* To participate in the selection, interviewing and induction of new members of staff. To be involved in manpower requirements in line with identified service developments, making recommendations on improvements in service as appropriate.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will provide high quality management and leadership within the antenatal clinic.
* Provide clinical midwifery expertise and leadership to the Antenatal Clinic, Maternity Ultrasound, Maternity Assessment Unit and support to the Gynaecology Clinic.
* Act as an advocate and liaise with members of the multi-disciplinary team to co-ordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of women and her family.
* Act as experienced mentor for less experienced midwives and student midwives.
* Work proactively to plan the development of complex antenatal outpatient care.
* Evaluate provision of care throughout the antenatal period for women and their families.
* Continuing responsibility for the day-to-day management of the allocated area, ensuring delivery of high standard of care through effective management of staff and resources within the service.

Person Specification
Qualification and professional training
* Evidence of management/leadership training/skills.
* Registered midwife.
* Evidence of further Professional Development relevant to current post.
Experience and Knowledge
* Previous experience at Band 6 within all aspects of Midwifery.
* Evidence of being up-to-date with current issues relating to professional practice.
* Complaints handling.
* Credible clinical expert.
* Can demonstrate practical application of quality standards within the clinical setting e.g. Care Quality Commission, NICE guidance.
Skills and abilities
* Evidence of advanced leadership skills.
* Good interpersonal & communication skills.
* Demonstrate initiative, motivation and ability to put things into practice.
* Committed to quality improvement.
