About the Team
The Sanctions and Illicit Finance team (SIF) is a friendly, busy, outward-facing team of c.30 people. We develop policies and legislation to address economic crime and illicit finance in the UK and overseas, to help protect the stability of the global financial system.
The team is made up of 6 branches:
* Economic Crime Strategy Unit (ECSU), one of the team’s domestic-focused branches, which works with the Home Office, DBT, law enforcement and the private sector to deliver economic crime strategy.
* Anti-Money Laundering Unit (AMLU), which owns the Money Laundering Regulations and the supervisory system which oversee compliance with them.
* Sanctions and Counter Terrorist Financing branch, which works with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) and others to craft financial sanction regimes.
* Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and International branch. This branch leads our strategy towards, UK preparations for, and input into, meetings of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and leads work on tackling international illicit finance. FATF sets global anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing standards, and peer reviews countries against them.
* Technical Assistance Unit, which works with developing countries to assist their compliance with international standards on countering illicit finance.
* FATF Mutual Evaluation Preparation Unit. The team’s newest branch is leading preparation across the UK’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing regime for the UK’s upcoming evaluation by the Financial Action Task Force.

About the Job
In this role, you will:
* Play a key role in driving the UK’s system-wide preparations for our next FATF Mutual Evaluation Report, ensuring we get the best possible results in 2028. This would involve leading on drafting and coordination for discrete parts of the review, particularly those concerning the UK’s national coordination on AML/CFT issues, but also taking a broad view of preparations to ensure progress, deputising for the G6 Head of FATF Mutual Evaluation Preparation where necessary.
* Work collaboratively with leads across all parts of the UK/s anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing regime, to identify and address gaps in the UK’s compliance with FATF standards and bring together a comprehensive and coherent body of evidence of the UK’s effectiveness to present to the FATF.
* Develop relationships with key international stakeholders, including in the FATF Secretariat and in other countries’ AML/CFT regimes, to ensure UK preparations are informed by the more up-to-date views on AML/CFT effectiveness and help influence their views of the UK system.
* Project manage the complex Mutual Evaluation preparations across the UK regime to ensure timely progress, working with stakeholders to ensure they meet agreed milestones and using effective project management tools to identify and respond to any challenges in programme delivery.
About You
You will be someone with excellent collaboration skills, and an ability to work collegiately across a broad range of stakeholders ranging from government (Home Office, FCDO, DBT, HMRC, SFO, Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation, devolved governments), to regulators (e.g. FCA), the law enforcement community (e.g. National Crime Agency, police forces), private sector businesses, civil society groups, and international representatives from FATF. You will be responsible for building and overseeing effective stakeholder relationships, and using them to bring together the best possible body of evidence for the UK’s MER.
You will need to have strong project management and organisational skills, able to manage delivery of the multi-year programme of work to prepare for the MER and oversee the secretariat function for the cross-government governance function underpinning preparation across the UK’s regime.
