Senior Clinical Fellow POCUS and Intensive Care Medicine
Job overview
This post is available from August 2025 for an initial period of six months, renewable by mutual agreement. Applicants can be trainees in anaesthetics, intensive care medicine, acute medicine specialty, or emergency medicine (A&E). You must have experience in intensive care medicine and preferably possess airway skills. Candidates should hold MRCP, FRCA, or MCEM as appropriate to their background.
The ICU, along with the anaesthetic department, is recognized for using Enhanced Recovery and Goal Directed Techniques for major surgical cases, particularly effective in hepatobiliary and oesophagogastric patients. The hospital attracts many tertiary referral cases related to hepatobiliary and oesophagogastric pathology, with specialist expertise developed in managing severe acute pancreatitis, hepatic failure, and perforated oesophagus. The Unit is covered 24/7 by three tiers, each with eight junior doctors, with full intensive care specialist consultant support. It is recognized by the IBTICM for training in intensive care to advanced level, with a full weekly educational program provided to trainee doctors.
Main duties of the job
This post involves both clinical commitments on ICU and a substantial commitment to acute point of care imaging. This is an exceptional opportunity to learn from two of the country’s most successful point of care ultrasound trainers and gain relevant accreditations. You will receive training in trans-thoracic echocardiography in accordance with the intensive care society’s FICE scheme, with a view to completing accreditation within six months. Once trained, you could gain experience through further echocardiography, potentially expanding to further BSE level 1, BSE accreditation, or European Diploma of Echocardiography. Extensive training in point of care ultrasound will be provided, with a view to completing accreditation to level 1 thoracic standard (RCR) and further modules to allow completion of the intensive care society’s CUSIC scheme or the Society of Acute Medicine’s new FAMUS scheme. Additionally, further modular imaging competencies offered include critical care lung ultrasound, extended vascular ultrasound, DVT ultrasound, and basic & advanced abdominal scanning. Cross-sectional imaging teaching, neuraxial ultrasound scanning, and FAST scanning for trauma will also be offered.
