Job Summary
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialty hand and wrist interest who is passionate about the delivery of care and who enjoys working with like-minded clinicians who share in this vision.

The successful candidate will join 28 other Consultants, 1 Specialty Doctor, 1 Associate Specialist and 33 Resident Doctors and will be responsible for the management of Trauma and Orthopaedic patients along our care pathways and will be part of a team managing acute trauma lists, trauma meetings, fracture clinics, and regular Multidisciplinary team meetings.
They will be required to contribute to a 1 in 16 on-call rota.

Main Duties of the Job
Full ranges of trauma and elective services are provided. The Orthopaedic surgeons work in close association with the Southampton University Hospital Trust which is our Major Trauma Centre. We accept patients from the Wessex Neurological Centre in Southampton, patients with severe neurological damage may be treated in The Wessex Spinal Injury Unit at Odstock Hospital, Salisbury which is also the location of the Regional Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit.
Virtual fracture clinics are held every day and face to face fracture clinics run Monday to Friday all day. These are preceded by a trauma round where cases admitted during the previous night requiring surgery are assessed and their management determined. The trauma list takes place in dedicated theatres every day with a second trauma list Monday to Friday. At present there are five further sub specialty trauma lists during the week on various days.
Joint clinics are held monthly between individual Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Consultant Rheumatologists. The Complex Combined Hand clinic runs every month to discuss complex and interesting cases. A supportive Hand Therapy team is onsite attending monthly meetings for continuity of care.

Job Responsibilities
The successful applicant will join the team as a Consultant and will be expected to participate in all facets of the department including the general trauma on-call, general trauma operating lists, elective hand surgery lists and clinics, hand trauma operating lists and general fracture clinics to meet service demands.
Clinical Duties:
The post holder will be an Orthopaedic Consultant with a specialist interest in Hand surgery at Fellowship level. The post will be based at Queen Alexandra Hospital. Full participation in teaching, audit and research will be expected.
Education & Research
The teaching and training of Junior Medical Staff is regarded to be of paramount importance by this department. The teaching standards are in line with the agreement between the Trust and Post Graduate Dean.
It is expected that the appointee would contribute to the active teaching programme for undergraduates/specialist registrars/GPs/resident doctor staff and nurses. Monthly audit meetings are held on a rolling basis and are held at Queen Alexandra Hospital. These are attended by as many Consultants as possible and all resident doctor staff, nursing staff and allied health professionals. This is on a rolling half-day basis allied to other specialties within the hospital.
The department plays an active part in the Wessex Regional Post Graduate Orthopaedic training programme, which occurs on alternate Fridays during the University term time and is run in conjunction with the Orthopaedic Department of University Hospital Southampton. Teaching sessions are held in Southampton and Portsmouth and once a term in other departments within the region. Time will be made available if the Consultant is required to participate in regional teaching.
The Consultant may be expected to be a named Educational Supervisor for resident doctors.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential:
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
* Medical Degree (MBBS / MBChB or equivalent)
* FRCS T&O or qualifications of an equivalent level
* Recognised Fellowship in Hand surgery including management of inflammatory arthritides and spasticity.
Experience Essential:
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via
* Certificate of completion of training CCT or CESR. Proposed CCT, CESR date must be due within 6 months of interview
* CESR/portfolio pathway, or alternative routes to specialist registration
* An appropriate higher Trauma and Orthopaedic surgical qualification
* Demonstrable skills and experience of Hand Surgery
* Demonstrable skills and experience of Trauma Surgery
* Understanding of clinical risk management
Desirable:
* Hand Diploma (BSHH or European)
