This is a Speciality Grade Anaesthetist post, to re-establish cover in Speciality Grade cohort (6). The Practitioner will be responsible for the continued care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the department. This hospital provides a broad canvas of surgical specialities but additionally is a tertiary centre for Plastic surgery, ENT, Maxillo-Facial surgery and ENT.
Out of Hours Commitments:
3. 4.0 PA will be allocated to represent 1 night resident emergency care per week, 20.00h-08.30h, at 4/3 remuneration. In some weeks, it is possible that night shift cover is not required (depending on Departmental leave position), in such instances, these 4 PA would be reallocated towards Elective Theatre activity.
4. This post may be used to provide a degree of evening session elective surgery activity, the exact extent / requirement of this is currently unclear, and will be established when post is taken up, or thereafter.
5. 4 or 5 - depending on night requirement - DCC sessions will be directed towards Elective Theatre activity.
6. Additionally, there is a possibility that Saturday morning elective surgical activity will be established. Should this change occur, a pan departmental (rather than individual) solution will be sought and adjustments made to job plans. The exact extent / requirement of this is currently unclear, and will be established when post is taken up, or thereafter
Most Anaesthetic specialities are represented; involving both elective and emergency work, although there is only elective work in general surgery and orthopaedics. There is some paediatric anaesthesia in many of the surgical specialities. A CEPOD Theatre allows emergency surgery during working hours.
There is a suite of 9 operating theatres and large Recovery Area. We also have 5 ‘remote’ theatre sites; an Ophthalmology/General Theatre, dental sedation suite, Obstetric Theatre (housed within the Labour Suite), elective endoscopy theatre and a remote ECT suite. The 7-bedded ITU/HDU was refurbished in 2015.
The Department provides anaesthesia for all the above specialities (see 2.1). In addition, we cover CEPOD theatre. Intensive Care is provided by 7 Consultants, and we have an input to the HDU patients. An obstetric epidural service is provided. Additional workload includes:
7. Acute pain team
8. Chronic pain for internal referrals
9. Central access service (Hickman, Midline etc.)
10. Pre Assessment (general and obstetric)
