We are seeking to recruit a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in critical care. The role would be suitable for a dual critical care/anaesthetic consultant.
UHD is made up of Poole General Hospital and Royal Bournemouth Hospital and is part of a major service restructure. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will initially work at both the RBCH site, and the Poole General Hospital site for the Critical Care component, before the Units are amalgamated in late 2025. The Critical Care Unit will then be entirely RBH-based. The Anaesthetic component will require delivery of anaesthetic sessions across both sites.
The post holder will be in a team of 16 Consultant whose job plans are divided between critical care and providing anaesthesia for surgical lists (RBCH/ PGH). This is a full-time10PA contract with the option to take on an additional 1.0 Direct Care PA.
We are proud to have received Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) from the Royal College of Anaesthetists after an extensive Peer review in recognition of our commitment to quality and patient care. We also continue to have excellent feedback from the trainees who rotate through our unit from the Wessex Deanery in recognition of our training at all levels of the curriculum.
We are a cohesive, friendly department and actively planning for significant service reconfiguration with other Trusts in Dorset which will result in a larger new build critical care provision at Bournemouth (30 beds). At present, the Royal Bournemouth Hospital is the regional centre for cardiology and vascular surgery. Furthermore, we undertake a high number of upper GI surgeries. We maintain good links with our local teaching hospital in Southampton for referral for neurological support and cardiothoracics, with active involvement in our Critical Care network.
During the interim stage of our Trust 's transformation there will be an expectation of providing some resident on-call DCC.

Our values define who we are as #TeamUHD. They underpin everything we do now and in the future. They define how we treat our patients, visitors, and each other, our valued teammates and colleagues.
UHD are investing in services across the Trust, with many being transformed and developed following merger and the New Hospital Programme.
This means that some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or long term. Recruiting Managers interviewing for this role will be happy to answer any specific questions that you have about this at interview.
There is a planned move for this service anticipated during 2025, when thisrole and base of work will relocate to RBHsite. Upon relocation of the role/service, excess mileage allowance / reimbursement will not apply, and any travel between the postholder’s home and work base will be classified as a commute. Any other changes unrelated to this, will be handled in line with Trust/National terms and conditions.
Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively and flexibly within a team are essential. We have a very well established Senior Nursing Team, with regular meetings to discuss issues and work in collaboration effectively. The successful candidate will be expected to take an active role in the clinical supervision and training of Anaesthesia trainees from the Wessex Deanery as well as trainees undergoing core medical training and Foundation doctors working in critical care. The successful applicant will contribute to the Department’s clinical governance processes, including participation in monthly morbidity and mortality meetings.
We are a proactive and friendly department providing anaesthesia services for the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Hospital. Some colleagues maintain special interests, for example in obstetric anaesthesia. Trainees from the Wessex School of Anaesthesia work across both Bournemouth and Poole and many non-clinical activities, such as clinical governance meetings, formal teaching and journal clubs are combined.
There are resident trainees at Poole and Bournemouth to cover Critical Care, and a nurse-led critical care outreach service. Emergency Theatre cover at Bournemouth is provided out of hours by consultant anaesthetists with a non-resident consultant on call and a second anaesthetist staffing a twilight and weekend emergency list. Emergency Theatre cover at Poole is provided by trainees, with on-call Consultant cover.
