Our Route
Central route is at the heart of Britain's railway. The route covers a major part of the national rail network and is a key commuter line in and out of Birmingham, with hundreds of thousands of passengers and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. Within our route is the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and the West Midlands, the Snow Hill line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Worcester, the Cross City line in Birmingham, and lines to other cities including Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford.
We are home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest station outside of London with more than 170,000 passengers using it every day.
About the Role
What will you be doing?
As an On Track Specialist based out of our Saltley Depot, you will be managing the planning, coordination, and operation of all On Track Plant (OTP) to achieve the route work bank. You will promote compliance with legislation, Network Rail company standards, and Rail Industry Standards on the use of OTP and provide motivation and support for continued improvement in OTP operational standards.
What your day to day will look like:
1. Providing support in the planning of operations involving OTP at Delivery Unit and Route level.
2. Providing a check of the Lifting Operations involving OTP in compliance with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment regulations, Network Rail, and Rail Industry Standards.
3. Providing the technical lead on OTP including all briefing requirements to maintenance staff and suppliers.
4. Providing expert advice and guidance on OTP operations to local management.
5. Providing coaching and mentoring support for supervisors and senior managers required to undertake OTP assurance.
6. Providing local support for national initiatives involving OTP improvements.
7. Conducting assurance surveillance and inspections to identify good practice and incidents of non-compliance and take appropriate action.
8. Providing out of hours support for real-time lifting operations.
9. Acting as a regular liaison and key point of contact with OTP suppliers to manage compliance with relevant standards and maintain a good working relationship.
10. Providing the focus for technical support for OTP incident investigations.
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
1. Experience of planning.
2. Knowledge of LOLER regulations and application.
3. Knowledge of Construction Design and Management Regulations Site Safety requirements.
4. Ability to obtain Network Rail Lift Planner competence.
5. Knowledge of the engineering safety management and risk assessment processes.
6. Ability to work under pressure and autonomously.
It's not mandatory to have the below, but it would be desirable to have:
1. Significant relevant experience of railway engineering.
2. Experience of the construction industry.
3. Experience of mentoring and coaching others.
4. Holder of Appointed Person competence or Network Rail Lift Planner competence.
5. Experience in both maintenance and projects.
6. Experience of leading assurance activities.
