School of Psychology You are invited to apply for a part-time preferred (full-time possible) Research Assistant position supporting research in an exciting new area of ‘wearable brain imaging’ that can be used in young children. The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr Johanna Zumer and based at the School of Psychology and Aston Institute for Health and Neurodevelopment, Aston University (Birmingham). This is a fixed term post, supported by funding from HLS, Aston University. The aim of the project is to kick-start research using Aston’s newly acquired OPM-MEG brain scan equipment. In general, this type of imaging makes use of a bike-style-helmet with sensors that can be worn by a younger child as they do some psychology task. However, before these complex experiments can occur, preliminary setup tasks need to be completed. You will be responsible for the setup tasks that help initiate Dr Zumer’s research in this field, specifically in making use of kiddie-friendly versions of attention tasks. These setup tasks may include (i) completing ethical approval documents, (ii) setting up the kiddie tasks (experimental software), and (iii) beginning to test them in young children outside of the imaging. Opportunities to be involved in technical setup of the OPM-MEG will be possible. The post would suit a psychology graduate interested in pursuing research in a psychology/neuroimaging field related to cognitive experiments. You will be supported to gain experience in the relevant tasks and provide experience for your future career trajectory. It is preferred for the work to be spread over part-time at 0.6 FTE, approximately 16-18 weeks. However, requests to work up to full-time (1.0 FTE at 10-11 weeks) or down to 0.4 FTE (25-27 weeks) will be considered. In total, approximately 360-400 hours of work will be requested. While some components of the work can be completed remotely/online, the post-holder must be available to come to the Aston campus regularly for lab work (IHN building) and in-person meetings (Aston Main Building) during some portion of Monday-Thursday 9am-5pm. In all cases, the role can start immediately and must be completed by 31 July 2025. Due to potential for working with children and in the IHN building, an enhanced DBS check is required.
