Snapshot
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Product Manager to define and evolve the behavior of the Gemini model series. You will be instrumental in molding the "personality" and style of Gemini, ensuring that it is helpful, engaging, and aligned with our values, plus configurable and calibrated to different scenarios. This is a rare opportunity to fundamentally shape the overall direction of large model development.
About us
Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, product managers and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.
The role
As Product Lead for Model Behavior, you will be the champion for understanding and improving model behavior for the Gemini base model. You will work at the intersection of user experience, research, engineering, and data science, translating user insights into a concrete and actionable model behavior roadmap. This role requires a deep understanding of human-computer interaction, strong familiarity with Gemini models and other models in the ecosystem, and the ability to drive clarity and consensus on nuanced, open-ended questions.
Key responsibilities
* Define the Gemini base model behavior, in collaboration with Research and UX Research. Develop a clear, actionable definition of Gemini's desired personality, tone, and communication style, considering factors such as overall principles and goals, user needs and context, and ethical considerations.
* Work with product teams to ensure that the base model works reasonably “out of the box” for their use cases, and is also highly configurable to their persona and style requirements.
* Create and maintain a prioritized roadmap for behavioral improvements, incorporating user feedback, competitive analysis, and emerging best practices in human-AI interaction.
* Develop comprehensive style guides and training materials for researchers, engineers, and raters, ensuring consistent application of the Gemini “house style" across the board.
* Work with Research to pioneer novel techniques to align large models with human values, e.g. more helpful, more engaging, better overall character, and so on.
* Work with Research, Data Science, and UX Research to define and implement robust style eval framework, helping to translate comprehensive and “vibes-based” definitions of quality into hill-climbable metrics.
* Work with Marketing, Comms, and Developer Relations to shape our external narrative for model behavior, including paths to supporting more ecosystem transparency around model behavioral design.
* Become a subject matter expert for model behavior across models in the ecosystem, understanding their quirks, capabilities, strengths, limitations, and technical foundations.
About you
To set you up for success as a Product Manager at Google DeepMind, we look for the following—
Core skills
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
* 5+ years of experience in product management or a related technical role.
* Ability to thrive in ambiguity and shape your own path. You are comfortable navigating uncharted territory, taking initiative, and defining a clear path forward in a dynamic environment.
* Strong stakeholder management skills. You recognize the importance of collaboration and possess the ability to foster a culture of shared ownership and success across multiple teams.
* Exceptional collaboration. You excel at bringing people together, driving consensus, and effectively communicating with diverse teams of engineers, researchers, and stakeholders across groups.
* Strong interest and technical fluency in machine learning systems. You keep up with the latest LLM research and can confidently engage in in-depth technical discussions with researchers.
* Proven experience as a technical PM or similar role. You have successfully managed the lifecycle of a machine learning product or platform, from ideation to launch.
Preferred skills
* Ecosystem pulse—deep understanding of, and passion for, the LLM landscape. You actively play with different models and stay up-to-date on the latest updates and advancements. You have developed a set of well-informed takes on what makes models delightful, helpful, annoying, trustworthy, and so on.
* Experience with and passion for human-computer interaction (HCI) design.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including prompting.
* Experience with quality—e.g. ranking, modeling, evaluation.
* Background in AI/ML, HCI, Linguistics, Psychology, Philosophy, or a related field.
