Job summary
Birmingham and Solihull LMNS (Local Maternity & Neonatal System) was established in 2017 to support maternity and neonatal care across Birmingham and Solihull to implement the recommendations of "Better Births" (2016), and more recently Ockenden Maternity Review (2022) through the delivery of the National Maternity Improvement Programme. To deliver against the above, the BSOL LMNS works closely with University Hospital Birmingham sites and Birmingham Woman's and Children's Hospital to deliver jointly on improvements through transformation, system collaboration and providing local system assurance to NHSE.
We have an exciting opportunity for one Band 6 neonatal nurse to support the delivery of culturally competent genetic services and improve perinatal outcomes for our population. The Close Relative Marriage and Genetic Risk Nurse will be aligned to the Maternity/Neonatal Services of University Hospital Birmingham, to work closely with the regional genetics service and cover Central & West area and East & North areas of Birmingham.
This role will work alongside communities to enhance identification, empower decision making and appropriately refer to genomic services. The role will support families at increased genetic risk associated with close relative marriage. The nurse will ensure staff are supported to undertake training on genetic literacy and will work closely with genetic/genomic services to improve access.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for an experienced Band 6 Registered Nurse with a desire to make a difference. This post will be an extremely rewarding role to be part of a regional programme dedicated to providing the best possible care and experience to all our patients.
The Close Relative Marriage and Genetic Risk Neonatal Nurse will proactively work alongside the Close Relative Marriage Midwife with women from ethnic groups and those at greater risk from genetic related disorders, to encourage a greater level of genetic testing/awareness/literacy among families where consanguineous related genetic disorders are present and will improve access to genetic services for families, thereby enabling informed reproductive decision-making.
The Close Relative Marriage and Genetic Risk Neonatal Nurse will also support the promotion and educational programmes for professionals and families pertinent to close relative marriage and the presence of a consanguinity related disorder.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
* Clinician with current NMC registration
* Registered Nurse Subpart 1 Adult or Children's Nurse, Midwife on the NMC Register
* Recognised neonatal qualification i.e. ENB 405 or equivalent
* Specialist knowledge in a relevant subject to post graduate level
* Evidence of ongoing personal and professional development
Experience Essential
* Subject matter expertise in neonatal care
* An understanding of both genomics/genetics and neonates (or the ability to develop this understanding)
* Previous experience at a band 6 level in neonatal care
* Significant experience of working in a busy and complex environment
* Experience in communications and stakeholder management.
