Band 6The post holder works as a skilled practitioner and to be proactive in the management of capacity to ensure the equitable access to appropriate beds for all patients admitted to the Royal Berkshire Hospital. To maximise the efficient and effective utilisation of the Trust's beds in conjunction with the Clinical Site Manager and Lead Clinical site manager.
Band 7 The post-holder works as an expert clinical practitioner and is responsible for the delivery of patient-focused programmes of care. The post holder will
1. Proactively co-ordinate bed management over a 24hour period. To maximise the efficient and effective utilisation of the Trust's beds by co-ordinating with the support of the Lead Clinical Site Manager, ED and the wards to ensure all access targets are met both for ED and waiting lists
2. Provide an 'out of hours' site management service to include operational management and clinical lead for the hospital at night.
The post covers 24hrs 7 days per week on a long days/nights

Job responsibilities
5. Ensure appropriate and effective allocation of beds for both emergency and elective admissions. The aim is to ensure patients are allocated to the right bed for their care. Understand the workload targets, which have been set for clinical areas, and demonstrate commitment to their delivery. Ensure that quality and risk management issues are escalated appropriately.
6. To have ongoing awareness of capacity issues Bed availability, current bed status, outliers and bed closures.
7. To utilise the escalation policy and cross care group transfer procedures appropriately.
8. To effectively communicate the bed state to key personnel (ie On call manager, Clinical Site Manager, directors etc).
9. To take every possible step to ensure the Trust meets local and national standards single sex accommodation, 4hr access target ambulance handover and 18 week target.
10. To prioritise competing demands in relation to utilisation of capacity.
11. Contribute to service and policy development in relation to Trust bed management.
12. Offer advice to GPs and outside agencies regarding the admission process.
13. Ensure patients are being transferred from other hospitals or are being repatriated to other hospitals is co-ordinated in a timely, efficient manner and against local and national targets.
14. Assist in the monitoring and maintenance of the health, safety and security of self and others in work area. Identify and assess risks in work activities, and assist in developing strategies to manage these effectively. Ensure team works within risk management/ occupational health legislation and Trust procedures.
15. Contribute to the implementation of the development of the service. Be aware of new evidence and research in both general and specialist fields. Work creatively to develop practice and new ways of working, taking the lead in the change management process when appropriate.
16. Develop own skills, taking responsibility for continuing professional development and performance, maintaining own portfolio in accordance with post registration requirements. Works to achieve competencies appropriate to grade. Is able to identify own development needs in relation to current practice and future plans, setting personal development objectives.
