As we expand, we are looking for an HV Electrical Safety Specialist to lead high-voltage (HV) safety compliance, policies, and accreditation across our Power Division.
SCOPE OF ROLE
As an HV Electrical Safety Specialist, you will act as the primary point of contact for HV safety matters, ensuring compliance with electrical distribution safety rules, maintaining NERS accreditation, and overseeing HV safety policies and procedures. You will also mentor engineers, support competency assessments, and provide independent assurance through audits and inspections. This role requires regular UK travel, with an occasional presence at our HQ in Potters Bar.
HOW YOU'LL SUCCEED
1. Leading HV safety compliance, ensuring adherence to NERS accreditation and industry regulations
2. Developing and maintaining HV policies and procedures, acting as an author and reviewer
3. Providing expert guidance on all HV-related safety matters, up to 132kV
4. Managing external electrical safety contractors, balancing internal and external HV activities
5. Undertaking the role of Substation Safety Log Duty Holder, overseeing switching operations and safety compliance
6. Monitoring and maintaining NERS accreditation, ensuring compliance across all activities
7. Mentoring and guiding engineers towards achieving Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status
8. Acting as a trainer and assessor for HV roles and competencies (e.g., SAPs, Jointers, Fitters)
9. Serving as National Grid OC8 Code Compliance Safety Coordinator
10. Supporting SHEQ strategy, collaborating with the Head of SHEQ and wider Occupational SHEQ Team
11. Driving continuous improvement, implementing digitalisation of HV policies, procedures, and record-keeping
12. Conducting site audits and inspections, ensuring integrated management system (IMS) compliance
WHAT IT TAKES
1. Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Senior Authorised Person (SAP) for HV up to 132kV
2. Strong technical knowledge of HV equipment, switchgear, and electrical distribution safety rules
3. Experience working with UK Power Networks / National Grid, either directly or through a Principal Contractor
4. Proven leadership skills, with experience mentoring engineers and assessing competencies
5. Excellent problem-solving abilities, with the ability to analyse and interpret complex technical data
6. Strong communication skills, able to collaborate across teams and present confidently
7. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital SHEQ management systems
8. Flexible, proactive, and able to work independently or as part of a team
Essential Qualifications:
1. HNC in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
2. Full clean UK driving licence
3. NEBOSH Diploma or other Occupational Health & Safety qualification (desirable)
