Cardiothoracic Anaesthetic Practitioner
NHS AfC: Band 5
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research.
Job overview
We are seeking a Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) to join our cardiothoracic anaesthetic team. If you want to be part of a supportive team that provides excellent care to patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery, this may be the perfect opportunity for you. We are eager to recruit forward-thinking, motivated practitioners. While prior experience in an anaesthetic role is desirable, we also welcome applications from newly qualified nurses and ODPs.
In this anaesthetic practitioner role, you will work clinically within the anaesthetic team, participating in both the cardiothoracic operating theatre and the cardiac angiography suite. We have three operating theatres, two cardiac and one thoracic theatre, which allow for diverse anaesthetic experiences in cardiothoracic anaesthesia.
You will receive encouragement and support as you develop your skills and complete your competencies during your supernumerary period. We offer a structured preceptorship and education program to facilitate your participation in our in-house anaesthetic courses, enabling you to develop your skills and complete your competencies. Additionally, there will be opportunities for you to attend study days and the Perioperative Care Course.
Your duties will include preparing specialised anaesthetic equipment, monitoring and assessing patients, securely managing their airways during anaesthesia, responding to any changes in their condition, and evaluating the effectiveness of the care provided. You will participate in all stages of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and maintain high standards of personal and professional conduct. Always maintain patient dignity and confidentiality.
Main duties of the job
As a Registered Perioperative Practitioner, Anaesthetic Nurse, or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP), you should be prepared to work in a busy environment, collaborating closely with the anaesthetist to provide high-quality patient care for our cardiothoracic patients undergoing anaesthesia.
