Full time
Location: Bristol (Hybrid – 2 days from office/3 days from home)
The role
Based in our Bristol office, this hybrid role will work with our IT and DevOps engineers to develop and maintain technical solutions for the business.
You will work with a range of technologies and operating systems, troubleshooting issues, supporting staff, and ensuring that the systems are functioning optimally.
This role is essential in helping XMOS stay productive and agile, working alongside similarly minded passionate people, in a collaborative environment.
Key responsibilities
This role will be structured based on business needs and your level of experience, with a primary focus on delivering robust infrastructure and support across the organisation.
The IT function ensures the operational stability and security of company-wide systems, while DevOps is dedicated to optimising and supporting the Engineering organisation. Your responsibilities will align with these priorities, ensuring the smooth operation and continuous improvement of XMOS’s technology landscape.
The responsibilities will include a mix of hard and soft skills. Our team is often called upon to act as a cross-functional link between teams, to experiment with new technologies and to drive organisational changes through automation as well as building relationships.
Some of the technologies you will be exposed to include:
* Active Directory, Kerberos and Entra services for authentication
* HyperV Hyperconverged and Esxi clusters with link aggregation and iscsi
* Highly available switch and router stacks
* Operating systems covering Windows, macOS and Linux (ubuntu and redhat-based) and their various command line tools
* Git/GitHub for source control
* python/perl/bash/groovy/powershell for scripting and developing tools
* C/C++/assembly is used by the engineering organisation, and you may end up reading a bit of this code
* Testing infrastructure including pytest as well as managing machines used for testing on real hardware
* Jenkins for CI/CD
* Ansible for provisioning servers
* Slurm for clustered resource allocation
* Atlassian suite for knowledge base (confluence) and organisation (JIRA)
The ideal candidate
You’re a fast learner who has some experience in IT and/or DevOps and would like to expand your skillset in both areas. You are excited to work in an organisation with an open approach to sharing knowledge and many experienced engineers to learn from. You enjoy working directly with these competent users and solving technical issues whilst also being approachable and happy to help solve more traditional IT issues.
You are organised, an effective multi-tasker, and can escalate complex issues when needed. You are a responsible person who can be trusted to find and follow best practices. You are sharp but humble enough to seek help when working on something unfamiliar or when things go wrong.
Key skills and qualifications
* Experience on Windows, Linux (CentOS/Ubuntu), and Mac OS, being comfortable in both Gui and command line environments.
* Hands-on experience with troubleshooting hardware (PCs, laptops, peripherals) and software issues.
* A collaborative and customer-focused mindset with excellent problem-solving skills, a desire to learn and the ability to communicate technical solutions clearly with technical and non-technical people alike.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in an agile and fast-paced environment.
* Familiarity with high-level languages (eg python, bash, powershell or groovy)
* Familiarity with the software engineering lifecycle using technologies such as git/GitHub, Jenkins and Jira.
* Solid understanding of Office 365 and Active Directory, along with fundamental networking concepts and protocols, such as DNS, DHCP, IPv4, 802.11 etc.
At XMOS, we believe that diverse experiences and perspectives drive innovation and success. We know that no one checks every box, and we don’t expect you to. If you’re excited about this role, passionate about what you do, and eager to learn, we want to hear from you—even if you don’t meet every qualification. Your unique background, skills, and potential to grow are just as important as ticking every box. If you believe you could make a valuable contribution to our team, we encourage you to apply.
