Apprenticeship – Valve Technician (Cowdenbeath)
Experience you will gain
You will learn skills including manufacturing, the use of hand tools, understanding materials, machining, and hand fitting techniques. From years 2 to 4 you will be given placements for 12 months in a valve department on a rotational basis. You will learn the basic functions of each valve type, common failure modes, how to safely strip and inspect each valve type as well as how to assemble and test the finished valve to the correct standards. Your experience will be supplemented by additional work-based training courses.

Typical responsibilities
* Assessment and Inspection: Evaluate the condition of various valve technologies and equipment, identifying any signs of wear, damage, or malfunction. Perform thorough inspections to determine if repairs or replacements are necessary.
* Repairs and Refurbishments: Carry out repairs on faulty valves, replacing or refurbishing components as needed to restore full functionality. Ensure that repairs are done efficiently and to the highest quality standards.
* Re-assembly and Testing: Reassemble valves after repairs or refurbishments, ensuring that all components are correctly aligned and functioning. Perform testing to verify that the valves meet operational and industry standards before returning them to service.
* Documentation and Reporting: Keep accurate records of inspections, repairs, and tests. Ensure that all work is documented in accordance with company procedures and industry regulations.
* Compliance with Standards: Adhere to industry standards and company procedures for all repairs, refurbishments, and testing processes. Ensure that all work complies with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
* Participate in training programs to develop your skills in valve technologies and stay up-to-date with industry advancements. This includes gaining proficiency in new tools, equipment, and technologies.
* Customer Interaction: In some cases, you may interact with customers to understand their needs, provide technical support, and ensure their satisfaction with the repair and refurbishment services provided.
Qualifications
* SVQ Level 2 – Performing Engineering Operations
* A Higher National Certificate (HNC) as a minimum
* The opportunity to gain accreditation through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
* The potential for offshore training
Preferred Qualifications
* National 5 or equivalent in Mathematics and English
* National 5 or equivalent in two from the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Graphical Communications, Art and Design, Computing, Craft and Design, Engineering Science or a relevant Skills for Work qualification
An applicant with a Foundation Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering will have deemed to meet all the above criteria.
