We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Level 2 Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice to join our dynamic Area 12 team.
Job Title: Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice – Level 2
Duration: 21 months
Starting Salary: £23,926 (subject to 2025 review)
Working Hours: Mon-Fri, 7.30am - 3.30pm (Flexibility for occasional nightshift, this is to gain experience on activities only carried out within nighttime closures)
Location: Wood View, Sheffield Road, Birdwell, Barnsley, S70 5TT
Responsibilities:
* Attend project and work briefings as required.
* Drive/operate vehicles/plant requiring general and specialist skills including vehicle checks, routine maintenance (e.g. oil and water checks), and cleaning.
* Perform all aspects of highway maintenance works including routine and cyclic maintenance activities, minor civils’ works, litter picking, etc.
* Participate in winter maintenance operations.
* Engage in emergency call out operations.
* Take responsibility for the safety of yourself and others within your team to ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation.
* Carry out vehicle checks prior to shift starting, correctly filling in defect books.
* Record Drivers hours.
* Allocate and capture time and resource utilisation in line with operated allocation system.
* Keep records, complete all necessary paperwork, and communicate with other employees of Amey, sub-contractors, the emergency services, the police, the public, clients, and customers.

* Level 1 in English and Maths, or GCSE in grade of 2-3 (E-D).
* Full UK Driving License.
