The Role:
Lila Sciences is seeking a thoughtful and dynamic Director/Sr Director of Synthesis to join our team. The individual will help to shape our physical sciences synthesis efforts through the leadership of an exceptional team, ideation of new scientific campaigns, and establishment of critical capabilities and valuable workflows. The role reports into the Head of R&D.
Responsibilities:
* Lead a team of scientists and engineers across all synthesis efforts
* Contribute to the ideation of new scientific campaigns in an effort to bring new materials for sustainability into the world
* Execute synthesis steps in scientific campaigns
* Work closely with Product Managers to design ideal synthesis workflows, and clearly communicate synthesis results
* Troubleshoot workflows and instruments related to synthesis efforts
* Provide expertise to Product Managers to support the development of target product profiles, updating synthesis capabilities as needed to deliver product candidates
* Collaborate with Characterization, Testing, Software, ML, and Automation/Engineering teams to ensure data flow from all synthesis capabilities
* Collaborate with Physical Sciences leadership to identify consultants to support new capability builds
* Project manage the build of experiment capabilities and their deployment in science campaigns
* Manage synthesis CAPEX including vendor relationships and budget requests
* Assist in synthesis strategy and planning for new and existing automated and autonomous workflows with deep integration of AI
* Demonstrate clear and thoughtful communication
Qualifications:
* Experience synthesizing materials in a variety of form factors
* Experience with methods for scaling
* Experience in design and execution of synthesis across multiple methods, e.g. PVD, CVD, sol-gel, hydrothermal, etc.
* Experience with material assembly or device integration
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience with automation of synthesis methods
* Experience with online monitoring of synthesis
* Experience with regulatory requirements for commercialization of materials
* Can balance strategic thinking while executing and getting into the weeds on a regular basis
* Organized with strong project management skills
* Data focused with experience dominated by experimental knowledge and a leaning towards data science and computation
* Clear decision-maker, rapid learner, with an appetite for speed. Fervent desire to coach a team in that direction
* Values, communicates, and interacts with others with high levels of transparency and respect with the acumen to engage and influence at all levels within the company
