A Controls and Instrumentation Technician is required for a field-based role across the North region of the UK. This position involves the maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement of electrical and electronic control systems within power generation plants. Responsibilities include working with instrumentation such as flow, pressure, level, and temperature sensors, as well as PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and telemetry systems. The role supports site reliability and performance while ensuring compliance with health and safety procedures. Travel across sites is necessary, with occasional overnight stays.
Key Responsibilities
Perform fault diagnosis, repairs, and maintenance on operational control & instrumentation assets.
Work with a range of instrumentation, including gas analysers, flow, pressure, level, & temperature sensors.
Support servicing of fire and gas detection and safety systems.
Conduct preventative, predictive, and emergency maintenance to optimise plant performance.
Assist in the implementation of DSEAR remedial works and periodic inspections.
Collaborate with electrical, gas field, & engine technicians to resolve issues and share information.
Supervise & direct approved contractors on-site for installation, repair, or maintenance of EC&I systems.
Produce reports and input data into Maximo and other IT-based systems.
Manage personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, vehicle, and support maintenance of the regional workshop.
Ensure all tasks comply with health and safety policies and procedures.
Experience & Skills Required
Experience in maintaining and calibrating instrumentation.
Proficiency in working with LV electrical control panels and electrical isolation procedures.
Ability to read electrical schematics and process & instrumentation diagrams.
Strong fault-finding skills in LV control circuits, instrumentation loops, and PID controls.
Understanding of HMI, SCADA, PLC, and telemetry system maintenance and troubleshooting.
Experience in water, utilities, heavy process, plant, or manufacturing sectors.
Familiarity with emergency shutdown, safety, and IT network systems.
BTEC National Certificate or equivalent NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in a relevant field.
CompEx Foundation or CompEx 01-04 certification (advantageous).
IET 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (City & Guilds 2382) (advantageous).
Knowledge of communication networks, including Ethernet, CAN-Bus, Profibus, RS232/485 Serial, and Fibre Optics.
Full UK driving licence with the ability to travel between sites.
