Lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering
We are seeking to appoint a permanent post as a Lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering, to contribute and support the development of Teaching & Learning, Research, and Knowledge Exchange within the School of Engineering at UWE Bristol.
This role is offered as a full-time appointment (100%) and presents a fantastic opportunity for a candidate with a background in Civil and Environmental engineering and associated areas. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and delivering both fundamental knowledge and innovative engineering content in Civil and Environmental engineering, and Computational Fluid Dynamics, providing mentorship to students, and contributing to research initiatives. We are particularly interested in candidates who engage in research to influence cutting edge practice and contribute to the Research Excellence Framework (REF), in the areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Infrastructures for the Climate Emergency; Hydrology; Water Sustainability; Waste Management; Sustainable Cities; Net Zero Carbon Design; Computational Modelling and Simulation; and/or Smart and Sustainable Infrastructures.
We also value candidates who not only possess a strong academic background but also have practical experience in relevant industries in the net-zero transition technologies and digital transformation that can help develop students across our engineering programmes such as Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive, Robotics, and Mechatronics Engineering. Furthermore, teaching responsibilities span undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels, and include supervision of UG, PG projects and group projects, within the School of Engineering, with potential contributions to Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses.
About you
We require candidates that have a broad set of skills and can teach across Civil and Environmental Engineering themes. Specifically, we are looking for individuals with familiarity from introductory field skills and GIS up to the use of Python, wastewater management, hydrology and flood risk estimation, with the skills to apply these to a broad engineering context, and expertise with commercially available tools and own developments. We highly value candidates who have a background and knowledge that can help develop our aspiring student engineers.
Candidates should have or be near to the completion of a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. We welcome applicants from a professional practice or industry background with a qualification equivalent to postgraduate level in a subject relevant discipline together with relevant professional experience within the Civil and Environmental Engineering sector. A chartership with Civil and Environmental Engineering professional bodies is highly desirable.
A teaching qualification and experience of teaching in Higher Education is highly desirable. Experience of working in or collaborating with relevant industry is essential and there will be opportunities to work with industry partners on knowledge exchange projects. A portfolio of research that relates to the University’s Transforming Futures Research Strategy 2020-2030, aligned to topics such as applications for Civil and Environmental Engineering; Infrastructures for the Climate Emergency; Hydrology; Water Sustainability; Waste Management; Sustainable Cities; Net Zero Carbon Design; Computational Modelling and Simulation; and/or Smart and Sustainable Infrastructures, as well as being in line with the University’s ethics, is essential.

This is a permanent post and is full-time working on a 100 per cent contract. This post is available on a job share basis for applicants wishing to work part time.
