Internal Redeployment Only - Outreach Officer (Higher Education Roadshow) An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in the UK Student Recruitment and Outreach Team at Cardiff University as an Outreach Officer (Higher Education Roadshow). The post holder will support the delivery of the Higher Education Roadshow project – a collaborative initiative between Cardiff University and Cardiff Metropolitan University to promote the benefits of higher education throughout Wales, primarily to school pupils aged 13 - 16. This will include visiting schools, supporting and organising events, developing materials (e.g. online and for workshops), and supervising student ambassadors from both institutions who support the Higher education Roadshow project. This post is full-time (35 hours a week) on a fixed-term basis until 31 July 2027. Key Duties Manage the Higher Education Roadshow project, with a specific focus on engaging and inspiring students form under-represented groups and helping them to gain an understanding of the benefits of higher education and the opportunities available to them. Deliver Higher Education Roadshow sessions on-site, off-site (primarily throughout Wales) and online to pupils in Key Stage 3 and 4. Groups will vary in size from smaller groups of 10-15 pupils to full year groups of roughly 200 in school assemblies. Organise and deliver school visit regional weeks across Wales (and potentially outside Wales), which involves overnight stays. Design and deliver a creative and engaging programme of on campus activities which complement outreach work and feed into both institutions on campus activity plans. Organise on-campus events which complement outreach work. Support the development of communication plans and the renewal of Higher Education Roadshow materials to ensure they are appropriate for the target groups. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of, and provide to potential applicants, accurate information concerning aspects of student life at Cardiff University and Cardiff Metropolitan University, including study opportunities, entry requirements and processes, student fees and finances, teaching methods, accommodation, student life and support. Provide professional advice and guidance on relevant processes and procedures to internal and external customers, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood. For example, this includes overseeing the booking procedures and advising teachers and/or careers advisors who would like to engage with the project. Collaborate with others in order to make recommendations for developments of established processes and procedures, with a specific focus on the evaluation of the Higher Education Roadshow Project. This includes consultation with key stakeholders to make improvements to the Higher Education project Create reports for the Higher Education Roadshow steering group. Ensure that the Higher Education Roadshow Project is delivered to schools, proactively changing the delivery according to school requirements while ensuring it meets the strategic aims of Cardiff University and Cardiff Metropolitan University. Supervise the day-to-day operation of the casual staff (students) who support the Higher Education Roadshow project, including the allocation of work tasks, production of work schedules, monitoring of holiday cover/working arrangements, providing training and support to staff members and students where necessary. Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required – both for Cardiff University and Cardiff Metropolitan University. Create specific working groups from colleagues across the Universities to achieve project objectives. Supervise specific project teams on an occasional basis to accomplish key objectives. Develop and deliver training within school engagement – for example, training student ambassadors so they can deliver talks to local schools. Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the project. Instruct and guide other employees across the University on Higher Education Roadshow matters as required, including coordinating staff to run pre-16 academic taster sessions. Contribute to other joint Cardiff University-Cardiff Metropolitan University outreach initiatives as required – for example representing the University at recruitment events across the UK. Key Duties continued Please note that travelling to schools is a requirement of this job and as such applicants must have a full and valid UK driving licence. It is not a requirement that applicants have their own vehicle. A flexible approach to working is essential, as the job will require out-of-hours working in order to accommodate school visits and to support institutional open days/events. Support core student recruitment activities as required, including open days and campus tours. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check as the work involves regular work with young people and schools. It will not normally be possible to take annual leave on days when undergraduate open days take place in either institution or during the confirmation and clearing period during the summer. About the Department The Communications and Marketing Department is responsible for the University’s reputation and branding as well as UK/International student recruitment operations. It covers six areas: communications, marketing, student recruitment, digital communications, international and public affairs. Communications plays an important part in building and maintaining the reputation of the University through effective communication to the public and to external and internal stakeholders. It communicates the achievements and aspirations of the University through a variety of media and includes a film unit. The team represents the University on a corporate level. Digital Communications is responsible for the design, development and content of the external website and the intranet. Marketing is responsible for developing a strong brand identity for the University at the corporate level, with an emphasis on better visual branding and market research. Student recruitment plays an important role in attracting the University's undergraduate and postgraduate students from throughout the UK and Internationally, working in partnership with the University’s colleges and academic schools to recruit higher calibre students. The team also manages the University’s widening participation programmes and the School’s Partnership Project. The International Office drives the University’s international recruitment strategy and advises on all areas related to international recruitment and development. Public affairs leads on stakeholder relationships locally, nationally and internationally. Essential Criteria Qualifications and Education 1. Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience. 2. A full and valid UK driving licence. Knowledge, Skills and Experience 3. Able to demonstrate a strong commitment to Widening Participation and the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion agenda. 4. Experience of organising and delivering engaging activities and events for school pupils, including awareness of safeguarding and risk management considerations. 5. Able to demonstrate professional knowledge on key university matters such as UCAS, student finance and student support, to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers. 6. Ability to set up standard office systems and procedures and make improvements as appropriate, such as budgets, risk assessments and school booking procedures. Customer Service, Communication and Team Working 7. Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, to a wide range of people. This includes, for example, the ability to deliver talks to school pupils, write content for web and communications, and writing or presenting reports for senior managers. 8. Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered. Good attention to detail. Planning, Analysis and Problem solving 9. Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems with range of potential outcomes. 10.
