It is essential that you hold the NHSCSP Certificate of Competence for this role.
To participate in the day-to-day cervical screening workload of the Cytology laboratory.
To primary screen and rapid pre-view sufficient number of cervical smears per annum to achieve minimum target set by National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP).
To undertake history checking of NHSCSP request forms.
To undertake manual reporting using the laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
To participate in non- gynae preparation.
• Primary screen and rapid review cervical cytology samples to provide a high quality service by adhering to the standards of the National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP).
• Issue negative and inadequate diagnostic reports
• Refer difficult and abnormal cases, suggesting a diagnostic result, for a second opinion.
• Manage own daily workload to ensure sensitivity, specificity and annual screening workload figures as recommended by the NHSCSP are maintained.
• Undertake non-gynae preparation.
• Be proficient at entering result data on to Pathology IT system and be able to interrogate the system to access patient information relating to their cytology/histology history.
• Assist BMS staff with collation of statistical data.
• Participation in both internal and external Quality Assurance schemes adopted by the department to ensure high quality performance and to include annual National EQA scheme assessment.
• Observe all departmental Health and Safety policies and COSHH regulations for the safety of all staff and legal requirements.
• Continue professional development to ensure scientific and technical proficiency are maintained, to include mandatory 3-yearly updates held at an accredited Cytology Training Centre.
• Assist with general laboratory/MLA duties when required, to include demonstration of cytology practice to visiting Practice Nurses as part of their training.
