Salary: £89,800 - £112,250 plus London Weighting Allowance £5,319 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

ABOUT STUDIOS PRODUCT GROUP
This position is for the bbc.com worldwide team who create solutions and content for our non-UK audience. The solution is currently provided by 3 teams, one managing the front-end, one the content management system and tooling, and a third taking care of the remainder of the back-end systems. We are currently in the process of going through a transformation to adopt better agile and engineering practices, however, we are always curious and looking to improve both ourselves and our processes/tooling/etc. The team pride themselves on being friendly, open, honest, and supportive. The bbc.com team is part of the wider Studios Product Group which takes care of many well-known BBC brands and how their content is managed and distributed.
EXTEND
This role is advertised as part of our BBC Extend programme for disabled people. THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineering Manager to lead several teams of talented engineers in delivering high-impact, scalable, and innovative solutions for bbc.com. This role is crucial to driving the technical direction, team development, and successful delivery of projects that align with our company's goals and values. As an Engineering Manager, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, balance technical depth with leadership acumen, and foster a culture of excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership and Development
* Responsible for recruitment, onboarding, and retaining top engineering talent.
* Provide mentorship and career development for team members, fostering a growth-oriented environment.
* Set clear expectations and manage performance to ensure accountability and high standards.
Technical Oversight
* Guide the team in architecting, building, and maintaining robust, scalable systems.
* Conduct code reviews and provide technical feedback when needed.
* Ensure adherence to best practices in software engineering, including coding standards, testing, and documentation.
Strategic Planning and Execution
* Align team objectives with company goals and business priorities.
* Develop and execute project plans, balancing feature delivery, technical debt, and team capacity.
* Identify, mitigate, and communicate risks to ensure timely and high-quality project delivery.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
* Partner with Product Managers, Designers, and other stakeholders to ensure well-defined requirements and deliver impactful solutions.
* Drive alignment and build consensus across different functions and teams.
Organisational Influence
* Advocate for and implement technical and organisational improvements.
* Collaborate with peers and leaders to drive cross-team initiatives.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
KEY CRITERIA
* Proven experience with designing and scaling distributed systems.
* Hands-on coding experience and the ability to contribute or guide technically when necessary.
* Experience using Javascript/Typescript, React, Go, and AWS.
* Experience managing performance, resolving conflicts, and fostering team alignment.
* Expertise in Agile methodologies and managing iterative development processes.
* Experience driving data-driven decision-making and measuring success through metrics and KPIs.
* Leadership experience in mentoring, developing, and retaining top engineering talent.
* Strong foundation in computer programming principles, including data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and system design.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
* Previous experience as an Engineering Manager or similar leadership role.
* Experience working with large-scale, consumer-facing systems.
* Demonstrated track record of driving organisational change and innovation.
