Job overview
You have the opportunity as a band 5 theatre practitioner to make a difference and impact on our service users' experience. We are looking for highly motivated individuals to be part of the team in theatres at the James Paget University Hospital. This exciting opportunity will mean you are part of a theatre team that is currently in transformation with the addition of two new orthopaedic elective hub theatres in mid 2024 and the addition of robotic surgery within the same time frame. This role requires you to have adaptability and expert knowledge in one speciality but also proficiency in another and the willingness to learn multiple.
The Department has 13 Theatres which provide services for General Surgery, Colorectal, Breast, Gynaecological, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics, Trauma, Orthopaedics and Maternity alongside satellite anaesthesia opportunities.
You must be a Registered Nurse (NMC) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC).
You will be given the opportunity to progress your professional development skills-based and educationally through our embedded band 5 development pathway, with the additional opportunity to develop skills in Surgical First Assist extended role. Newly qualified practitioners are welcome to apply; a full preceptorship pack would be offered to any successful candidate.
Main duties of the job
You will work as part of the multi-disciplinary theatre team to provide care during the delivery of clinical services throughout the patient's perioperative journey. The role requires an ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team, within the appropriate legal requirements, acts, policies, procedures, and guidelines. The successful applicants must be able to communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and be versatile to the department's requirements, acting as a role model and mentor for the students and visitors that access the department, upholding the trust's values and behaviours.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care.
1. Ensure that agreed standards of practice within the area are maintained.
2. Maintain personal contact with patients, other health care disciplines, relatives, and visitors.
3. Commitment to provide training and share knowledge to those around in the team and mentorship support of new staff and student nurses.
4. To undertake appropriate enhanced roles, following the necessary training e.g., IV drug administration, ECG recording, Advanced Scrub Practitioner (ASP) Role.
5. Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs, in accordance with Trust Policy.
6. Ensure that they can safely admit/discharge or transfer patients from theatre and or recovery.
7. Responsible for the management and coordination of theatre activities in the absence of more senior staff.

Education and qualifications
* Registered Nurse or ODP NMC/HCPC
* Preparation for mentorship course or equivalent

Experience and knowledge
* Previous NHS experience within the last 12 months
