Job description
Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent
It will be no surprise that you’ll be experienced in finance with a proven track record of providing professional accounting in local government. You will be a qualified accountant with excellent leadership skills, including leading with confidence and integrity.
Managing a team of around 4 who are responsible for preparing revenue accounts, corporate budget monitoring, and taxation. As a leader at the Council, you’ll help us navigate a variety of complex challenges, using your leadership skills to balance public need and political expectations to deliver real value for the city.
You’ll enjoy working in an environment that offers plenty of opportunities to develop your skills, trusts your professional judgement, and encourages you to build a rewarding career.
This is a full-time post working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. Based at City Hall, the team currently works a hybrid of home and office based on business needs. On occasion, you may be required to work evenings to attend meetings. We offer flexible and agile working to promote a healthy work-life balance.
What you’ll be doing
Maximising resources available to the council using specialist knowledge in corporate finance, government policy, and local authority finance legislation. You’ll ensure the Council complies with indirect taxation requirements.
Planning, managing, and leading the process by which revenue monitoring reports are prepared and reported. Your primary focus will be accounting tasks, preparing and reviewing relevant working papers for the statement of accounts, including timely responses to auditors.
What you’ll need
With substantial experience of accounting processes, financial planning, and understanding and interpreting legislation, you’ll be used to handling large volumes of data. You should be confident in using spreadsheets at an advanced level and reporting on this data.
A logical thinker, you’ll be able to problem solve in a creative and proactive manner. You’ll have a positive attitude towards flexible working and show resilience when working in a fast-changing operational support environment. Using excellent customer service skills will allow you to easily converse with all areas of the business and business support teams and translate their requirements into technical solutions.
You’ll hold an accountant qualification (CIPFA, ICA, ACCA, CIMA) and have a DBS check completed by ourselves.
What we can offer you
As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve the lives of those living and working in Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, and flexible working. We will give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise through training and development. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including discounts on city buses and trains, and help with relocation to Leicester, where appropriate. Those who excel in the role will have ample opportunities to take on new challenges.
