The primary purpose of a Clinical/EBME (Electro-Biomedical Engineering) Engineer is to ensure the optimal functionality, safety, and compliance of a wide range of medical equipment and systems with low, medium, and high levels of risk. The roles and responsibilities of a Senior Clinical Engineer include medical equipment management, commissioning and decommissioning, corrective and preventive maintenance, calibration and testing, end-user support and training, safety and risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and standards.
We are seeking an innovative, highly skilled and detail-oriented Clinical/EBME Engineer to join our dynamic team in the EBME workshop, which is aiming to achieve ISO 9001:2015 quality compliance. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise, exceptional problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and reliability in medical equipment. The post holder will have to work across all ENHT sites where required.
Main duties of the job
1. Support in managing the lifecycle of medical equipment, including inventory management and disposal.
2. Monitor and maintain the equipment library to ensure availability and proper functioning.
3. Manage spare parts inventory and procurement to support maintenance and repairs.
4. Support the EBME supervisor and Senior Clinical Engineers as needed in daily operations.
5. Provide technical support to end-users on the operation and maintenance of medical equipment.
6. Train and mentor apprentices and junior engineers.
7. Investigate incidents related to medical equipment and implement corrective actions.
8. Manage and respond to field safety notices in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Job responsibilities
1. Install, test, and commission new medical equipment.
2. Perform maintenance and calibration on various medical equipment, including patient connected devices.
3. Service a wide range of medical equipment to ensure reliability and performance.
4. Document all work in the equipment management database and maintain accurate records.
5. Collaborate closely with stakeholders, technical, and clinical staff to deliver high-quality service.
6. Assist in improving medical device services within the department.
7. Adhere to departmental Quality Standards in all work activities.
8. Investigate equipment incidents and report findings to the EBME Manager/MDSO.
9. Coordinate with manufacturers to resolve equipment issues and queries.
10. Report equipment issues and faults to regulatory bodies as required (e.g., MHRA, NRLS).
11. Ensure software and hardware upgrades are performed according to manufacturer instructions.
12. Act on Medical Devices Alerts and Field Safety Notices as directed by the EBME Manager.
13. Troubleshoot and maintain a variety of medical equipment, including diagnostic and life support devices.
14. Conduct routine inspections, calibrations, and preventive maintenance to ensure equipment compliance.
15. Collaborate with healthcare professionals to understand equipment needs and provide technical guidance.
16. Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns, diagnose issues, and execute repairs or coordinate with external service providers.
17. Manage spare parts inventory to ensure availability for repairs and compliance with regulations.
18. Stay updated on advancements in medical technology and standards, making recommendations for equipment upgrades.
19. Engage with manufacturers and vendors to resolve technical issues effectively.
20. Ensure compliance with safety regulations and maintain accurate equipment maintenance records.
21. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and implement new medical equipment installations.
Person Specification
Qualifications / Training
* BTEC / ONC in Electronic Engineering/ Biomedical Engineering (Level 5) or Physical Science or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience.
Previous Experience
* Experience of providing front line customer service.
* Experience in using safety testers, calibration and other test equipment.
* Experience of working with High Risk equipment.
* Experience of working within a Quality Management System.
Skills
* Knowledge and understanding of the risks to patients and staff arising from the use of a range of medical equipment.
* Electronic engineering skills including the use of test & measuring equipment, handling and assembly of components and boards, fault finding and diagnosis, use of technical manuals and circuit diagrams.
* Engineering skills including use of test and measuring equipment, assembly and bonding of components, use of technical manuals and drawings.
* Ability to use MS Windows and Office (Excel, Word, Outlook etc); to manage files and set up documents and spreadsheets.
* Ability to use computerised equipment management database system.
* Able to provide advice, instruction and training to small groups of staff on areas relating to areas of own responsibility of work.
* Able to travel to various sites to meet the needs of the service.
* Evidence of regular participation in formal and informal technical training throughout career.
* Experience in the maintenance and performance checking of clinical equipment.
* Experience of working in a clinical environment, taking account of patient safety, dignity and infection prevention.
