Our Healthcare Assistants are a vital part of the ward team, working closely with the RNs, the medical team and AHPs to ensure a positive experience and patient journey within the hospital.
The candidate must be able to provide holistic compassionate care, ensuring dignity and respect for patients and their families. The candidate must use their skills and knowledge to maintain safety, manage workload and prioritize.
The role of the HCA can be physically and emotionally demanding; the HCA must work in such a way that safeguards the patient and themselves alongside the wider team. The HCA must be able to adapt and work effectively with those with vulnerabilities or additional needs.
Care experience isn’t limited to working in a hospital environment, so those with care home or rehabilitation center experience will be considered. Ensuring transferable skills and personal qualities can be demonstrated through application and interview. One year of care experience is requested due to the dynamic nature of our ward environment.
Shifts are Days 0700 - 1930 or Nights 1900 - 0730. Term time or school hours cannot be accommodated.
The HCA must be able to communicate effectively, ensuring patients' preferences are respected and that the patient feels as comfortable as possible in what can be a difficult time. The candidate must be able to support both patients and families who have received bad news or require support during end-of-life care.
The HCA must be able to develop and demonstrate an awareness of how illness can affect a person and what interventions and medical/nursing treatment the patient is receiving. This is through understanding of patient report, visual observation, and close working with the RN. Ensuring working within scope of practice, seeking support and escalating to the registered nurse as necessary.
Following orientation and training, the HCA is expected to be able to support with all aspects of basic patient care, such as washing and dressing, bowel and bladder care including continence management, skin care and pressure area care, nutrition and hydration support, mobilization as per care plan and use of moving and handling equipment, promoting active recovery, rehabilitation and engagement activities as well as patient chaperones and escort.
The HCA must be able to ensure clear and concise documentation in patient records.
