Job Purpose
Advertised Salary: £30,000 - £33,000 (depending on experience) + company van (for work use only) + benefits.
Location: Remote, with regular travel across our East Midlands network.
We are currently looking for a Mechanical & Electrical Technician to join our growing and diverse teams across the UK.
The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities, maintaining 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks, and reservoirs, along with museums and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings.
The post holder will be required to work an annualised hour’s system, including a rota'd system with statutory holidays and weekends.
As a Mechanical & Electrical Technician, you will play an important role using your technical expertise to assist with the implementation of improving Plant and Equipment Assets and will safely support the delivery of improvements to equipment used in the maintenance and repair of the inland waterways network.
A technical foundation in mechanics / HGV is desired; with the potential to develop your skills in broader electrics via team training.
Location & coverage
This role will be based from our Newark Waterway Office (NG24 1FB) but will require travel throughout the regional waterway network for site visits and improvements.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
This role supports Canal & River Trust’s aims to improve safety and increase the number of people using the inland waterways network. Your skills will be used to maintain workboats and land-based plant which is vital to the core works delivered by the Trust.
Experience and technical knowledge working with the following is desirable:
* Hydraulic systems.
* Less than 48V DC systems.
* Cranes.
* Excavators.
* Lorry loaders.
* Experience within the Heavy Goods Vehicle industry would be advantageous.
Key responsibilities:
* Provide mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and marine support to assigned areas, assisting in the resolution of engineering-related situations.
* Manage defined work programmes, servicing, and repair works to meet objectives for a fleet of workboats and land-based plant.
* Produce recommendations for minor problems, undertaking design where appropriate, with knowledge of statutory obligations and Canal & River Trust policies.
* Supervise third-party works when required and manage accounts for costs.
* Participate in the standby rota to support customer service standards and respond to emergency situations.
* Comply with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy, report incidents, and complete risk assessments.
About you:
Technical:
* Time served apprentice trained or City and Guilds level 3 Mechanical / NVQ level 3 minimum in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
* Understanding of Health & Safety within site work and knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical regulations.
* Authorised Person in Mechanical or Electrical.
* Relevant valid competency for using plant/tools to maintain the canal/river environment.
* IPAF and confined space trained desirable but not essential.
General:
* Willing to actively participate in meetings, training, planning, and initiatives.
* Must be able to communicate clearly in verbal and written form.
* Excellent timekeeping and ability to work effectively as part of a team or alone.
* Valid driving licence appropriate for vehicle to be driven.
