The post holder will provide primary care dentistry to patients falling within the scope of the Community Dental Service, as set out by the Welsh Government, including non-registered patients in need of urgent dental care.
Main duties of the job
* To provide the full range of primary dental care for patients within agreed guidelines under the remit of a salaried dental service. The core CDS patients are a mix of children, and patients with special care needs, including adults. These include those who are anxious, have behavioural management problems, complex medical problems or learning and physical disabilities, including obesity.
* Treatment will include that under conscious sedation as required. In addition to the fixed clinics, care is provided from mobile units and by way of domiciliary care.
* Demonstrate and apply the principles of ethical behaviour relevant to dentistry, including honesty, confidentiality, personal and professional integrity and compliance with the standards for dental professionals laid down by the General Dental Council.
* To participate in the clinical supervision of first year Dental Core Trainees (DCT1s) and to assist in the Outreach training for final-year undergraduate dental students, hygienists and therapists.
* To provide emergency care for patients who are registered within the service during core hours.
* To provide emergency care for patients in support of the urgent dental care (Access) service as and when required, during core hours.
* To participate in the GA assessment and treatment lists.

Job responsibilities
* To undertake any other duties, appropriate to the grade, as required by the Senior Dental Officer or Associate Clinical Director.
* To ensure that high standards of clinical care are maintained at all times through Continuing Professional Development.
* To maintain the strictest confidence in relation to patient information whether informally or formally recorded.
* To have an understanding of the dental officers responsibility in relation to Clinical Governance, participating in clinical audit and peer review.
* To participate in regular appraisal with their Line Manager in order to help identify training and development needs, as per GDC expectations.
* To initiate quality standards within the department and to participate in quality initiatives within the UHB.
* To use the ACORN toolkit to accurately record and communicate the risk and needs of patients.
* To deliver evidence-based prevention as per the Delivering Better Oral Health: An evidence based toolkit, including the delivery of fluoride varnish and/or fissure sealant application on all patients especially as appropriate.
* To implement dental recall periods based on oral health risk and needs assessment and following NICE guidelines.
Person Specification
* BDS or equivalent. Registered with the General Dental Council. Included on a Dental Performers List
* Previous experience working within a primary dental care setting
* Experience of paediatric dentistry and working with special care groups
* A good understanding of the structure and undertakings of the Community Dental Service in Wales
* Relevant postgraduate degree or training qualification
* Experience of: Salaried dental service, Conscious sedation, Working in a domiciliary setting, Teaching and training, Assessment and provision of treatment under GA
* Use of computerised patient record system
* Excellent communication and organisational skills
* Computer literate and knowledge of modern educational technology
* Flexible and able to work independently
* Leadership skills, ability to support and motivate people
* Clinical governance knowledge
* Dental Foundation training knowledge
