JOB ROLE PURPOSE
You will lead the Defence Division with Design Management.
Sweet Project Holdings Limited are a £140million turnover business, specialising in the Data Centre and Defence sectors. We are looking to hire a Design Manager who will work within our Defence business. Currently this business turns over approximately £5million per annum, although we have identified this an an area for expansion. This will be our first hire for Design Management in Defence, and as such we are looking for someone who is able to manage multiple small projects (maintenance and new build), and have the ability to help us expand, both in terms of projects and geography.
You will be accountable for leading and managing all aspects of the design delivery process by developing a design compliant with the contract requirements, ensuring that design risk and opportunities are managed, from project inception through project implementation and client handover.
In addition, you will play a pivotal role using you own leadership skills, knowledge, experience and collaborative behaviours to lead and manage associated stakeholders to assure the successful safe, and efficient delivery of projects, whilst minimising potential risks to the business.
Collaborate with various stakeholders to drive excellence in design management, encouraging consistently high-quality standards throughout the project life cycle to maximise commercial and timely design delivery effectiveness and efficiency.
Manage design programme and commercial awareness through compliance of the client’s requirement but maintaining cost effectiveness for all project stakeholders.
Promote engineering efficiencies, strategic initiatives and previous lessons learnt.
Technical Responsibility
The Design Manager shall support the Project Leadership on a day-to-day basis by overseeing the design process, from concept to handover ensuring compliance with the client’s requirements, and advising on adherence on deliverables, timelines, budget, and quality standards.
The Design Manager will develop and maintain cross discipline collaboration with all designing and project stakeholders with respect to:
* Contract obligations
* Design details and reviews
* Design Quality reviews and acceptance
* Monitoring design production progress against deliverables
* Programme support and validation of design elements
* Procurement and package definition support
* Construction support against design intent
* Cost support
* Health, Safety & Environment
* General design management administration.
General and Lead designer Responsibilities
* Promote “Safety in Design”.
* Organise, attend, chair and record Client/User/Local Authority and other stakeholder design related meetings, workshops and design reviews, to address and resolve issues. Maintaining robust and detailed records of all actions and discussions.
* Develop, presenting and implement design strategies, concepts and proposals ensuring specification compliance for each design package, is package and project specific.
* Ensure designs, meet Quality, Sustainability, and Environmental aspirations.
* Prepare a Design Management Plan (DMP) and validate/endorse its alignment with any other external Consultant and Designer’s DMP for the full design production.
* Monitoring of design output quality.
* Provide internal reporting / client reporting as required.
* Manage the production of design detail(s) in accordance with the agreed Scope, Deliverables and Responsibilities Matrix (SDRM) and that design deliverables are produced in line with the agreed design Programme.
* Manage expectations and communicate design decisions effectively.
* Follow business processes and protocols with project specific design management documentation and guidelines, including, change control, RFI’s and technical submittals.
* Confirm that designers, consultants and sub-contractors deploy suitably qualified and experienced personnel.
* Managing, liaising and communicating with all project designers, CDP contractors and delivery stakeholders including the Client, regulatory and legislative authorities as appropriate.
* Support commercial teams with design advice on cost effective designs so that they can demonstrate best value, for Sweet Projects and the Client.
* Support operations team in the preparation of Health and Safety method statements and risk assessments in respect of design work as may be required.
* Supporting in constructability reviews/workshops.
* Use memberships and access to web resources for regular updates on relevant industry information, and best practice.
* Mentoring and guiding different design teams, providing constructive feedback, and fostering a collaborative and creative work environment.
Qualifications
Essential
* The post holder will be an experienced Construction Professional of any discipline (MEP or CSA) with a strong portfolio of design skills and extensive experience in design management
* Demonstrable experience operating at a design manager role
* Have a relevant industry qualification (RIBA, ICE, CIOB, EC)
* Valid CSCS Card
* Current driving licence
Desirable
* Degree qualified and Chartered
* B. Eng. Bsc or equivalent
Experience
Essential
* Proven experience in full understanding of the design process from inception to handover
* Detailed experience of construction coordinating and leading site staff and contractors
* Extensive knowledge of current Building Regulations and planning processes
* Aware of design principles and methodologies of building construction
Desirable
* Have experience in the high technology or industrial sector
* Good understanding of design and build construction contracts
* Managing the process of fully investigating value engineering and value creation opportunities
* Strong problem-solving skills
* Able to produce Contractor's Proposal documents in liaison with other internal departments
* Carry out the interrogation of enquiry documents
