About the Role
We're looking for a collaborative and passionate Senior Electronics Engineer to join our growing Engineering team at NPL. Reporting into the Principal Engineer, you will play a vital part in stretching our capability and taking our research to the next level. In this hybrid role you will spend approx. 2 – 3 days a week on site in Teddington, and 2 – 3 days working remotely. We value your work-life balance and are open to discuss flexible or part-time working arrangements to accommodate your needs.
As our Senior Electronics Engineer, you will provide specialist expertise in instrumentation and automation systems design, whilst being responsible for assuring compliance with legislation and standards of products provided by NPL.
Your work will have a tangible impact on our business and the UK as a whole. You will work with a team of professionals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, celebrating the unique contributions that everyone brings to the team.
We’re continually finding new ways in which our work can leave its imprint on the world. Yet to achieve our goals, we need highly technical and innovative engineering design solutions. First, you’ll understand what the aim of the project is. You’ll then review a variety of solutions to ensure your proposal matches the brief and that it can be delivered to the highest quality, on time and within budget. You’ll also provide analysis to test designs and monitor performance, as well as manage the design review process – communicating issues and keeping us on track.
As a senior member of the team, you’ll supervise those with less experience – sharing your knowledge and motivating them to do better. As an expert in your field, not only will you provide everyday design solution advice, you’ll also provide a consultancy service as needed across the department. As such, you’ll be expected to be up to date with the latest developments.
What you’ll be doing:
• Identifying and assist in capturing customer requirements
• Designing automation, instrumentation and safety systems and products
• Transferring requirements into designs and specifications
• Installing, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning automation systems
• Sourcing and testing instrumentation to prove suitability for application
• Preparing design risk assessments
• Issuing electrical wiring and interconnection drawings using CAD
• Managing and maintaining system documentation
• Checking designs and documentation for correctness and compliance with standards
• Working with suitable suppliers of equipment, services, and material
Please note, this role is known internally as 'Senior Design Engineer'

For this role, we particularly encourage applications from candidates underrepresented in STEM disciplines, in particular women, disabled, black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates, as well as the Armed Forces service leavers looking to transition into civilian workforce.
What you can bring to the role:
• Experience designing electrical automation, instrumentation, and safety systems

• Excellent CAD design skills

• Experience of electromagnetic compatibility issues
• System load and efficiency calculations
• Control systems design and mechatronics/robotics systems
If it sounds like you would be a good fit, we look forward to hearing from you. In return for your expertise, inclusive approach, and commitment, we will provide an attractive salary + benefits package and the chance to join a passionate and welcoming team.
Please note: Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert therefore we may at any time bring the closing date forward. We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical
We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance. Some departments may require a higher level of security clearance.
