Play a key role in protecting Scotland’s seas – join us as a Second Officer!
As a Second Officer in the Marine Directorate (formerly Marine Scotland), you’ll be part of a dedicated maritime team within the Scottish Government, operating vessels that support the marine enforcement and the sustainable management of Scotland’s waters.
In this dynamic role, you’ll be responsible for navigational watchkeeping, passage planning, and assisting with vessel operations. You will already have a basic knowledge of our work and will train towards becoming a skilled British Sea Fisheries Officer (BSFO). Your expertise will be essential in ensuring the safe and efficient running of our fleet, contributing to the protection and sustainability of Scotland’s marine environment.
You’ll be responsible for navigational watchkeeping, passage planning, and assisting with vessel operations to ensure safe and efficient voyages. As part of the role, you’ll also train towards becoming a British Sea Fisheries Officer, enhancing your enforcement capabilities.

Assist Commanding Officer to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel
Officer of the Watch
British Sea Fishery Officer Duties
Harbour stations
Navigating Officer and responsible to the Commanding Officer for passage planning, maintenance of charts and nautical publications
Ensuring bridge and navigational equipment is operational and informing Commanding Officer of any deficiencies.
Inspection and servicing of LSA and FFE equipment
Designated GMDSS operator
Administrative duties
Duties at the discretion of the Commanding Officer

Qualifications
STCW OOW Unlimited II/1 Certificate of Competency
Valid ENG1 Certificate – Must declare limitations prior to taking on role.
All relevant STCW qualifications
