Job overview
We have an opportunity for a Band 6 Community Paediatric Occupational Therapist to join our therapy team, where they will be able to gain experience in a wide range of Paediatric settings within Plymouth and the surrounding area.
We are looking for a team-oriented Occupational Therapist with paediatric experience, who is ready to expand their clinical and managerial skills. You will be based in Plymouth Child Development Centre and in the community in East Cornwall and West Devon.
Our children live in a variety of settings, ranging from the busy centre of Plymouth to isolated rural homes in Cornwall, and we have a diverse and growing population.
We undertake assessments to understand what the child or young person's strengths and difficulties are and identify if further support is needed. This enables us to provide the best quality care and most appropriate support for the child or young person and their parents/carers.
We work in partnership with parents/carers and children and young people to ensure individual needs are met and always review progress together.
We have an integrated team in the Child Development Centre, working closely with a range of other professionals within the settings and other agencies in the surrounding community.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
1. To carry out Occupational Therapy assessment as an autonomous practitioner. This will involve the use of specialised observation and assessment tools.
2. To work as part of an Occupational Therapy Team to assess, manage and treat children within the demands of the service as a whole.
3. To develop and deliver effective specialised treatment, and plan and implement appropriate review for children allocated to your caseload.
4. To provide therapy intervention, using appropriate treatment techniques in either an individual or group situation; providing activity programmes, advice and equipment as required. This will involve the management of therapy input to children with a range of complex conditions, including those with severe physical and cognitive impairment or disability.
5. To have a knowledge of specialist resources and equipment relevant to children and to give advice regarding its use.
6. To assess and treat children in a range of settings. This will primarily be at the Child Development Centre but may include special and mainstream schools, nurseries or at a child’s home when clinically indicated. This may necessitate travel from venue to venue and lone working situations.
7. To advise and support parents/carers and other professionals in meeting the needs of children on your caseload.
8. Demonstrate sound clinical reasoning in all aspects of practice, ensuring clear, evidence-based decision-making in case management, intervention planning, and service delivery.
9. To be responsible for your own practice and accountable for all aspects of therapy treatment and care delivered to the child.
10. To set a high personal standard of work, adhering to Professional Standards - College of Occupational Therapy.
11. To effectively manage a caseload, with the associated admin and other demands on time.
12. To take part in child protection procedures and attend multi-agency meetings as necessary.
13. To manage clinical risk within your own caseload, including undertaking appropriate manual handling risk assessment.
14. To contribute towards the development of clinical practice within the service.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy.
* HPC Registered Occupational Therapist.
Knowledge & Experience
* Proven knowledge of paediatric conditions requiring Occupational Therapy input.
* Proven knowledge of Occupational Therapy input for children with developmental needs.
* Awareness of multi-agency approach to children.
* Proven evidence of further post-graduate training in an area of specialist paediatrics.
* Previous children’s community Occupational Therapy role.
* Ability to build working relationships with peers and multi-agency professionals.
* Skilled in use of play/engagement activities.
