Job summary
We are excited to advertise a brand new position of Head of Nursing, based within our Division of Specialist Surgery & MSK. We are looking for an effective leader with proven delivery experience in a fast-paced environment. The post holder will be the senior nurse in SS-MSK, responsible for supporting the Divisional Chief Nurse in providing both expert leadership and clinical care across our two hospital sites. The division includes MSK, Ophthalmology, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Breast Surgery, and ENT teams. The post holder will ensure that all care delivered within these services adheres to the CQC essential standards, legislation, and the organisation's policies and procedures. The post holder will provide professional leadership, support, and development to Matrons, Advance Clinical Practitioners, Ward Managers, and Specialist Nurses; lead on the development of nursing/clinical practice across the surgical care pathway, with a particular emphasis on patient safety and quality of care.
Main duties of the job
1. Support the DCN in leading developments within the Division to improve patient safety, experience, and quality delivery.
2. Ensure effective nursing input into the Surgical Wards on an operational day-to-day basis.
3. Direct line management of defined Specialist Nurses.
4. Ensure that the principles of patient safety, clinical effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness are reflected in all standards and practices.
5. Act as a senior nurse giving advice, guidance, and supervision to junior doctors and nursing staff.
6. Support local development and implementation of guidelines.
7. Ensure visibility of the role in clinical areas through patient safety walk rounds and engagement with frontline staff.
8. Provide the DCN with reliable and expert advice and practical support.
9. Work collaboratively with the ADO, Specialty Leads, Consultants, Operational leads, and General Managers.
10. Ensure SS-MSK services are delivered within the agreed quality, performance, and financial parameters.
11. Coordinate and manage service developments in association with other senior managers.
