Working for our organisation
Medway NHS Foundation Trust is the largest acute trust and district general hospital in Kent. We have a proud history, originating in 1905 when a Royal Naval Hospital was opened on the site. Just over a century later, Medway NHS Foundation Trust was the first hospital in Kent to achieve Foundation Trust status. We continue to expand and modernise the array of services on offer to the people of the Medway towns, Swale and the wider West Kent region.
Medway is an Associated University Hospital with strong links to the Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical Schools and the new Kent and Medway Medical School.
The critical care programme currently consists of a 14 bedded intensive care unit (ICU) and a 10 bedded mixed medical and surgical high dependency unit (HDU). The critical care programme is part of the Perioperative, Anaesthetics and Critical Care Directorate and provides critical care support to the entire hospital, including a 24/7 outreach team (Acute Response Team: ART) and a post-critical care follow-up clinic.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This will be a 12 PA job with an allowance of 1 PA for Supporting Professional Activity. The average total number of hours each week is 48 hours. There is a flexible rota including periods covering 2nd On Call, Obstetrics and theatre lists.
The post holder will provide anaesthetics services to main theatres, day case theatres critical care and obstetrics. Separate 3, 6 or 12 month rotations to the Critical Care units (ICU and/or HDU) may occur depending on service needs.
* The post holder will have delegated responsibility for all the patients under care of the Consultants. He/she will refer to the Consultants when problems arise which are beyond his authority and/or experience.
* The post holder must maintain liaison with colleagues who are on duty immediately before and after.
* The post holder will participate in the duty rota with other middle and junior grade medical staff in the Department.
* The post holder will be required to actively participate in clinical audit and implement its results and relate these to the Trust and Directorate policies on Clinical Governance.
Person specification
Qualifications
* MBChB (or equivalent)
* Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice.
* Primary or Final FRCA (or equivalent)
Experience
* Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training, at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty, or have equivalent experience.
* Experience in various areas of Anaesthetic practice including Obstetric Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.
Knowledge and Skills
* Familiar with day to day organisation of Anaesthetic services in a busy DGH Anaesthetic department.
* Some understanding of principles of medical audit. Knowledge of national audit projects applicable to Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care.
* Understands principles of clinical governance and how to apply these.
* Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.
