National Grid is hiring a Principal Domain Architect on a permanent basis. The location for this role can be based in Warwick or London - We offer a hybrid working model.
Job Purpose
This role ensures that the NCIS organization of DPIT maintains technical knowledge and architectural integrity across WAN, SD-WAN, data center, and LAN product portfolios to support IT and OT services for National Grid. The candidate will develop technical standards, policies, guidelines, and architectures for efficient service design and delivery that are cost-effective to install and maintain.
The candidate will define services and evolve infrastructure capabilities, ensuring compliance for in-house and outsourced teams to facilitate rapid deployment, fault isolation, and proactive monitoring. They will oversee the architecture and design of WAN (Cisco routers, OSPF, BGP, F5 Load Balancers, Palo Alto Firewalls, Zscaler), SD-WAN (Cisco SD-WAN, Viptela, VMware NSX), and Campus LAN (Cisco Catalyst switches, DNS, DHCP, QoS) and Datacenter LAN Services (Cisco Nexus, Cisco ACI), connecting LAN and WAN (IPv4/IPv6, VRRP, MPLS, VPLS). A bachelor's degree and at least 10 years of experience in infrastructure architecture are required.
What you'll do
* Ownership for establishing the governance model to ensure compliance with requirements and recording any residual risks.
* Run solution architecture reviews on key programs, influencing and collaborating with Engineering and Delivery teams on system development.
* In-depth knowledge and working experience in infrastructure architecture and roadmaps for the technology.
* Development of service infrastructure patterns, standards, reference architectures, policies, and metrics, and socialization of these to all solution architects, delivery engineers, and operations teams.
* Collaboration with Solution delivery organizations to build understanding and awareness of operability requirements and emerging delivery methodologies.
* Responsible for specification, gaining agreement, and application of service standards.
* Engage with technical design and project managers to ensure understanding of service acceptance criteria and agree on testing processes.
* Examine evidence and evaluate the quality of project outputs against agreed acceptance criteria.
* Develop ideas and carry them through to practical demonstration, designing data collection tools and techniques for qualitative and quantitative data where necessary.
* Identify and respond to key business drivers and areas of business need not adequately supported by current and planned IT.
* Review new business proposals and provide specialist advice on information management.
* Evaluate options for providing IT/OT services effectively and efficiently and recommend solutions.
* Develop models and plans for the implementation of the strategy, taking advantage of opportunities to improve business performance.
* Conduct post-implementation reviews of technology applications and products introduced in pursuit of the strategy.
* Ensure that those within reporting line are appropriately developed, motivated, empowered, and deliver appropriate results.
About you
* Experience developing reference architectures and applying standards and patterns within architecture deliverables.
* Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
* Cisco CCNP/CCIE Routing and Switching or Datacenter certification is desired.
* Infoblox certification is desired.
* Thorough knowledge of network infrastructure, software-defined networking, and tools for Network Performance Monitoring supporting WAN, SD-WAN, Campus, and Datacenter LAN.
* Well-versed in networking technologies such as Cisco, VMWare, F5, network routing, LAN network security, and segmentation based on roles and policies.
* Defines the roadmap from the "as-is state" to the "to-be state" and designs a secure, efficient, and adaptable future state model.
* Excellent presentation and communication skills with a high degree of comfort with technical and business audiences.
* Experience working with stakeholders to identify relevant requirements and understand how those requirements fit into the broader enterprise context.
* May provide specific subject matter expertise input into the conceptual and technical architectures for large and complex projects.
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £50,000 - £70,000 - dependent on capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
