Data Centre Design Engineer
We are expanding our Critical Infrastructures division, including our award-winning data centre design and build team. We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic engineering professional with expertise in data centres and critical infrastructure.
Operates globally with a growing portfolio of clients. With over 200 staff members, we have achieved consistent growth and have ongoing expansion plans. The successful candidate will be a valued member of one of our key teams.
To support our current growth, this position will be based at our head office in Manchester, with travel required on a project basis within the UK and Europe.
Role Purpose:
Our data centre design engineers play a leading role as specialists in the field, supporting the delivery of data centre projects and coordinating the production of feasibility studies, audits, proposals, and managing design deliverables.
The Data Centre Design team works closely with clients throughout the lifecycle of a data centre project. The successful candidate must have a good level of understanding and experience to work independently at various stages of the project lifecycle, including tender and bid support, initial concept generation, construction stage design, commissioning, and operations. This can be done as part of construction delivery or standalone consultancy and advisory.
Personal Specification:
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in data centres and critical environments and will preferably be a qualified engineer with a bias towards either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
In addition to a professional engineering bias, you should have a good understanding of all data centre technologies, including Critical LV Switchgear arrangements, UPS systems, Standby Generation, Critical Cooling Systems (including Chilled Water), Fire Suppression, and Control and Monitoring Systems (e.g., BMS, PMS, EMS).
You should be capable of working both independently and as part of a team for project delivery. You should also be able to take a leadership role when a team is required for technical delivery.
You must be a good communicator, able to establish productive, professional relationships with key personnel both internally and externally. You should also have an understanding and experience of working with Data Centre standards such as Uptime Institute, BS EN 50600, and TIA-942.
You should be capable of undertaking audits of smaller data centre environments independently, commenting on elements such as Resilience, Reliability, Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, Maintainability, and Compliance with Relevant Data Centre Standards. You should also be able to manage and coordinate a small team for audits of larger environments.
You should be proficient with typical office software (e.g., MS Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and have a basic understanding of AutoCAD / Revit and BIM, although this is preferred but not essential.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
* Produce audits, concept designs, and proposals for data centres and critical facilities, coordinating with the wider design team as required.
* Manage the technical development of proposals and tender responses, supporting the Bid Team as needed.
* Produce and manage the production of specifications for data centre and critical environment projects.
* Review design drawings and specifications, providing feedback and comments as applicable.
* Produce, coordinate, review, and manage technical submittals.
* Work closely with suppliers and review quotations for technical compliance.
* Carry out site visits and surveys.
* Undertake data centre audits individually or as part of a team, against data centre engineering standards and best practices.
* Manage the distribution and sharing of design information with other departments, suppliers, subcontractors, consultants, and clients.
* Liaise with the procurement team to ensure necessary specifications and drawings are available to the required programme.
Skills and Qualifications:
* Strong technical experience in data centre engineering projects is essential.
* Proficient with all office software and able to produce high-quality professional documents, presentations, and reports. Experience with CAD, 3D, BIM software is preferred, but support from our dedicated CAD team will be provided where needed.
* Good communicator, both in writing and on the telephone.
* Able to prioritize tasks and manage time to meet tender return deadlines.
* Achieved or working towards Chartered status with a related recognized body (e.g., CIBSE, IET, IMechE).
