We are seeking a suitably qualified individual to join our Design Technology Department as a technician.
The overall purpose of the role is:
1. To support the Design & Technology department in the provision of a first-class service to pupils and teachers alike.
2. Ensuring that the workshop and classrooms are run smoothly and effectively.
3. Ensuring materials, equipment, and apparatus are operational, available, and well maintained, with health and safety in mind.

Main Responsibilities:
Teaching Support Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate the use of resources and materials and provide assistance and support in practical classes across all year groups.
2. Assist in practical classes and carry out demonstrations for teaching staff and pupils, including supporting the safe practice of machines and equipment during practical activities.
3. Assist pupils outside lesson time when progressing with practical activities.
4. Coordinate the use of resources and materials, providing support in setting up and packing away activities.
5. Contribute to the design and development of pupil projects and resources that assist in delivering lessons in the department.
Resources Responsibilities:
1. Prepare resources and assemble equipment and materials in advance of lessons, including ordering resources and materials, preparing materials for use, and ensuring equipment and machinery are operational and well-maintained.
2. Ensure that both routine and non-routine checking, cleaning, maintenance, testing, and repairing of equipment are carried out to the required standard.
3. Organise, store, and check the condition of materials and equipment.
4. Obtain materials from suppliers, receive deliveries, store materials, and liaise with the Accounts department to arrange invoicing and payment.
5. Check stock, order, keep stock records, and maintain resources.
Health and Safety Responsibilities:
1. Ensure the maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment through servicing and maintenance of machines, actively contributing to the assessment, monitoring, and review of health and safety procedures including itemised risk assessments.
2. Keep up to date with current procedures and practices through continuing professional development.
3. Safely treat and dispose of used materials and respond to actual or potential hazards.
4. Ensure the healthy and safe storage and accessibility of equipment, materials, and chemicals.
5. Help maintain general order of workshop areas and equipment.
Supporting Colleagues Across the School:
1. Support additional requests required by the staff of the Design & Technology department and other colleagues across the Junior and Senior Schools on an ad-hoc basis.
Key Contacts and Working Relationships:
1. Liaise with colleagues in the department on live tasks and job requests.
2. Work with pupils to clarify materials requested and resource and task requests to support project work.
3. Liaise with colleagues outside the department on tasks and job requests.
4. Liaise with suppliers of ordered/delivered goods and services, contractors, and couriers.
5. Liaise as one of the first points of contact with external visitors and contractors working within the building.
Planning and Organising:
1. Respond to immediate requests from staff and pupils, which are difficult to forward plan.
2. Organise daily, weekly, termly, and yearly tasks that allow for forward planning.
3. Plan own daily and weekly workload, taking into account scheduled tasks and additional requests.
4. Contribute to the overall planning and organisation associated with an effective and busy Design & Technology department.
The Ideal Candidate Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
1. A minimum of HND level qualification in a technical subject (ideally subject-specific) or recent applied practical experience in a similar role.
2. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
3. Ability to work well as part of a team, but also unsupervised and using own initiative.
4. Good planning and organisation skills, coupled with excellent attention to detail.
5. Analytical approach to problem-solving.
6. Ability to work well under pressure.
7. Numeracy.
8. Computer literate, with experience in using word processors, email, spreadsheets, and CAD software.
9. Experience in using 3D printers and laser cutters and associated software.
10. Experience with woodworking machinery, e.g. wood lathe, morticer, pillar drill, belt sander, bobbin sander, router, band saw, fret saw, circular saw, planer/thicknesser.
11. Experience with metalworking machinery, e.g. metalwork lathe, spot welder, MIG welder, forge.
12. Experience of working within an educational environment.
13. Experience of working with children.
14. Practical qualifications, e.g. safe use of fixed woodworking machinery.
About the School/Organisation:
The Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School, and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
