Job Advert Location Description
Priory Hospital Barnt Green are looking for an experienced and talented Chef to join our Catering Team. While experience in healthcare is not essential, it is preferable as catering in a hospital setting can create some interesting challenges. You will already have relevant catering qualifications to at least NVQ Level 2 or equivalent and Level 3 in food hygiene. You will have a good understanding of food allergens and dietary requirements.
You will report to the Head Chef and together with your Catering Assistant colleagues you will ensure that patients, staff and visitors are offered tasty and nutritious meals which are prepared to a high standard. You will be supported by an experienced Support Services Manager and together with your colleagues from the Maintenance and Housekeeping Teams, you will ensure that the healthcare team are supported to deliver high quality care. You will receive full training, support and guidance to enable you to feel confident and comfortable in your role. As part of this you will need to complete some bespoke training, including prevention & management of violence and aggression training (PMVA). You will also need to complete an enhanced DBS check (it’s worth remembering that a "positive disclosure" such as a criminal record will not automatically exclude you from working with us but it is highly recommended that you talk to us about anything you think may be disclosed as early as possible).
The duties of the job role are to:
1. Undertake the planning, preparation and cooking of meals, taking account of any special requests or dietary requirements within the unit.
2. Take full shift responsibility for the catering operation (in the absence of the Head Chef).
3. Ensure the cost-effective and efficient control of stock including placing orders for food products and the checking/reconciliation of deliveries. Ensure that wastage is minimised.
4. Assist the Head Chef by researching and creating new menus ensuring meals are of a high quality and compliment healthy eating guidelines.
5. Supervise assigned catering staff ensuring their quality of work continues to meet required operational standards and the company’s Assured Safe Catering policies and guidelines.
6. Organise and prioritise own work within established procedures, referring complex issues to senior catering staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
City & Guilds or NVQ2 equivalent.
Preferably level 3 in food hygiene or basic food hygiene with intentions of level 3.
Knowledge of food Allergens & dietary requirements.
Experience within a professional kitchen environment.
The role holder works within a busy kitchen environment using a variety of equipment where many routine duties require a degree of sustained physical effort. The role holder will be required to undertake specialist dietary training, as well as partaking in Priory’s mandatory training programme.
The Job Holder will be required to work 5/7 Days.
Applicants need to be fully flexible yo cover a range of shift times. Shifts vary from the following,
Earlies- 07:00-15:00
Mid Shift- 09:00-17:00
Late Shift- 10:30-18:30

Priory Hospital Barnt Green is located in the stunning Lickey Hills Country Park, 10 miles south of Birmingham City Centre. We have thirty-three beds across three wards including a ten bedded female NHS Psychiatric Intensive Care, a thirteen bedded mixed gender NHS acute service, and a ten bedded private acute ward beds for both men and women.
In addition to providing inpatient services, the hospital has a large Outpatient Department, a Daycare Service and regional conference facilities. These services are expanding to include pathways in ADHD, Autism and potentially CAMHS this year so this is a fantastic and exciting time to join our Therapy Team.
We support a wide range of clients and needs from referral systems including Consulant Psychiatrists and PMI Companies.
