JOB PURPOSE The jobholder will play an essential role assisting Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in teaching the nursing teams throughout the 24 hour period. As an experienced nurse the jobholder will co-ordinate activities on the ward/department ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within the ward/dept. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. The jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the nursing team and ensuring effective management of the ward/department in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse. 3. JOB DIMENSIONS The jobholder will work within an environment caring for adult patients. The jobholder will support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in the day to day management of approximately 3.80 whole time equivalent nurses and support staff. 4. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Acts in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct Clinical care delivery - Provide a clinical lead and role model to nursing staff by delivering high quality care. - Undertake clinical procedures where dexterity and accuracy are required - Maintain a safe working environment Responsibilities for patient and client care - Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care and treatments using specialist clinical knowledge and clinical skills, advising patients and relatives as appropriate. - Organises own clinical workload and that of more junior members of CNS team. - Receives supervision of clinical care and outcomes from Clinical Nurse Specialist Team Manager. Freedom to act - Refer patients as appropriate to other members of the multi-disciplinary team - Makes clinical assessments and treatment decisions and delivers care within clearly defined policies and protocols Communication - Maintains accurate clinical and other records using the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trusts documentation. - Support patients and their families, communicating sensitive condition related information, ensuring they receive required information to enable them to participate in their care delivery - Liaise with the multi-disciplinary team and Community Services (as appropriate) to ensure seamless provision of care delivery Education and Training - Provide training and education of learners and other junior staff - Actively participate in the development of own personal development plan and performance review - Provide education and training to patients and their carers. - Keep up to date with developments and advances within the specialty Leadership and management - Investigate and respond to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events. - Work with Matron to promote the development of Clinical Nurse Specialists to undertake the CNO Ten Key Roles as appropriate to the team. - Under the direction of the Matron participates in or lead the development of specific elements of nursing practice, reflecting the CMT and Nursing Directorate business plans. - Participates in the setting, monitoring and improvement of standards and quality of patient care, including those standards defined in the National Benchmarks for Essential Care - Promote evidence based practice, wherever possible - Engage users and carers views on service delivery and development. - Implement policy and practice guidelines specific to the clinical specialty, proposing changes where appropriate - Contribute to policy and protocol development for speciality area. - Exercises a personal duty of care in relation to equipment, resource and stock control utilising equipment and supplies appropriately. - Responsible for the day to day supervision of junior clinical staff and students within the specialist team. - Maintains record of workload and performance monitoring information and reviews this on a regular basis with team manager. Research and Audit - Contribute to the research agenda - Undertake audit programmes specific to client group, treatments and developments. - Participate in clinical trials as appropriate.
