Plans, lays out, and performs a variety of highly-skilled operations pertaining to the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, circuits, and all related systems and equipment. May act as primary mechanic for the hospital fire alarm system and associated equipment. Plans/performs all electrical work in construction or renovation, as required.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
1. Plans and lays out job requirements:
Plans laid out jobs according to requirements. Plans proposed installations from blueprints, sketches, or specifications.
2. Performs electrical installation and repair:
Isolates electrical problems using testing instruments. Examines and tests distribution panel controls, circuits, fixtures, motors, etc. to locate faults/malfunctions. Replaces defective/worn parts and installs new electrical controls, switches, contractors, wiring, lighting systems, and other electrical and electronic systems. Makes changes and alterations in existing electrical systems, including rerouting and redesigning of circuitry. Checks all electrical systems for proper operation, including high voltage lines (480 V), emergency generator equipment, Operating Room conductivity, etc. Checks to assure that all electrical installations comply with pertinent code requirements. Must be available for troubleshooting and/or consultation.
3. May install and maintain fire alarm systems:
May be assigned primary responsibility for installation, repair, and maintenance of hospital fire alarms and associated systems and equipment, including sprinkler systems. Periodically conducts scheduled testing in cooperation with Fire Department officials. Checks alarms for proper reset after use. Repairs/adjusts pressure switches and other components of the sprinkler system.
4. Performs related duties:
As required, consult with vendors' or manufacturers' service representatives to expedite and/or coordinate installation, maintenance, and repair activities. Assists supervisor in planning major or difficult jobs and assists less skilled craftsmen with the more involved aspects of the work. Cooperates with co-workers to expedite jobs requiring more than one craft and carries out assignments in other craft areas to the extent of capabilities and as circumstances require. Assists and directs less skilled craftsmen with the more involved aspects of the work.
Work Experience:
2-5 years of electrical experience in a healthcare setting.
Experience with fire alarm and paging systems.
Knowledge of data wiring.
Knowledge of the operation of generators and transfer equipment.
Licenses:
CT E-2 electrical license required. E-1 License.
Educational / Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma, minimum of four years trade school or apprenticeship program. Two to five years of experience in a healthcare setting. One year experience in installing and maintaining 480 high voltage and fire alarm systems. Ability to troubleshoot equipment and control circuits. Layout of new installations.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
Current or equivalent Journeyman Electrical E2 license. Level I licensure. Valid Connecticut Class I driver's license.
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
General at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.
Special Requirements:
Knowledge of electrical/mechanical trades.
Physical Requirements:
Light to medium and occasional heavy lifting in excess of 50 lbs. Works in awkward positions which require bending, climbing stairs and ladders, standing and walking, etc.
Work Environment:
Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, and heat. Often works in confined spaces in all types of indoor and outdoor elements.
Cognitive Requirements:
Mechanical aptitude, good math, verbal and written skills, ability to comprehend.
