Job summary This is an exciting opportunity for aclinical specialist speech and language therapist to lead our well-established and highly reputed upper airway service at the Royal Brompton Hospital. This post sits in the Adult Lung therapy team (within Rehab and Therapies (R&T) and Heart Lung and Critical Care (HLCC) clinical group). It is based in the asthma and allergy service, overseeing service delivery to patients with breathing, voice and sensory changes, secondary to laryngeal dysfunction. The typical caseload includes assessing and managing ILO, chronic refractory cough, laryngeal hypersensitivity, and related voice and swallowing difficulties. A core component of our service is the continuous laryngoscopy during provocation (CLP) clinic, which you will lead. The successful applicant should have significant experience in performing and interpreting laryngoscopies autonomously, often in challenging cases, to achieve accurate upper airway diagnoses and to aid in therapy progress. A laryngoscopy examination will typically form part of the interview process. You will manage two upper airway speech and language therapists (Bands 5 and 6) and be a key member of the upper airway multidisciplinary team. Clinical development and supervision is provided by the wider SLT team across GSTT, and the asthma and allergy service. You will be expected to further our reputation as a leading centre for the treatment of upper airway disorders. Main duties of the job As the clinical specialist SLT in the upper airway (UA) service at RBH, they will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the UA SLT service ensuring the appropriate development of services in conjunction with relevant therapy and medical consultant leads and the Associate Director. They will line manage and support the clinical development of the B5/6 SLTs. They will be jointly responsible for service planning related to speech and language services, deputising for the cross-site clinical lead SLT as required. They will maintain links and align services with Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals as well as establishing strong links with other UA services nationally. The post holder will demonstrate a passion for service improvement/ development, evidenced by previous successful completion and implementation of QI projects. An interest in research and developing a culture of research and improvement within SLT and the MDT is desirable. The post holder will practice clinically undertaking regular outpatient clinics including the provision of diagnostic laryngoscopy. They will play a major part in the governance and quality of the service delivery in conjunction with the Associate Director, divisional clinical and consultant staff. The job plan for this post will be split 75% clinical and 25% supporting professional activities (SPA) including service management, research and service improvement. This may need to be flexible dependent on caseload and service priorities.
