Job summary This is a replacement post for a consultant psychiatrist in Perinatal Psychiatry. The current post holder will be moving into a new role within the Trust in October 2023. The team provides specialist assessment and management for women of all ages suffering from, or at risk of suffering from, moderate and complex/severe mental illness either during pregnancy or up to 24 months postnatally. We also offer pre-conception counselling for those with enduring mental illness who are planning a pregnancy. We provide specialist advice to other services and accept referrals from maternity services, GPs, 0-25 service, social workers, IAPT providers and TEWV services. We work closely with all these services. If patients are open to another secondary mental health team, we will work alongside this team to offer specialist input for the woman during the perinatal period. Main duties of the job The outline work programme is attached in Paragraph 19. A yearly job plan including evaluation will take place with the Associate Medical Director and General/Service Manager for the specialty. Clinical duties will include: Working alongside other members of the multidisciplinary team to assess, manage and review patients within the Durham and Darlington Community Perinatal Mental Health Team. This will involve seeing patients at home when necessary as well as in outpatient clinics. Holding weekly outpatient clinics and seeing patients referred by GPs, Psychiatrists, Obstetricians, Midwives, Health Visitors, IAPT or other professionals within the perinatal team. Provide (or ensure referral to the appropriate service for provision of) up to date evidence based interventions. Assess and make recommendations under the Mental Health Act. Maintain a link and relationship with the relevant mother and baby units (MBU) and attend MBU MDT reviews (in person or virtually) for patients living within Durham and Darlington Community Mental Health team area in order to maintain continuity of care. Contribute medical expertise to child safeguarding proceedings. Share responsibility for physical health monitoring within the team related to psychiatric medications with the other Consultant Psychiatrist.
