ABOUT HMP Elmley… HMP Elmley serves the local courts in Kent so the majority of prisoners (55%) are awaiting a court appearance or to be transferred to another prison. The Education Department works closely with our prison colleagues to take a holistic view of each learner and provide them with the initial starting points to support them on their next steps. This can be helping them to read or speak English, providing them with basic health and safety or food safety so they can secure employment - whether that be within the prison or on release. Time is spent understanding the men’s learning, supporting where there may be barriers to this and providing pastoral support as they engage with education in a prison. Courses include English and Maths Functional Skills (Entry 2 to Level 2), ESOL Catering and IT. This is complemented by a range of courses available through distance learning at level 3 and beyond e.g. Open University, A Levels and BTEC level 3.
