Do you think you could play a key role in our continued commitment to engineering excellence? Then we need you. We are looking for an experienced Chief Engineer to lead the day-to-day engineering function across McGill’s Bus Group, ensuring safety and legal compliance with all statutory regulations and company standards, working within agreed KPIs to deliver improved fleet availability and maximising cost efficiencies. You’ll also carry out compliance audits of the group workshops and standards as well as demonstrating a culture of continuous improvement through the monitoring and managing information.
As the Chief Engineer, you’ll help us drive cultural change across our engineering function. Your ambition should help us overcome obstacles, identify business opportunities and we’d expect you to present these to the business to ensure we continually challenge our standards and improve our performance. Your organisational skills should facilitate a clear direction for your team, enabling structured work streams and long-term planning to be a key focus.
This role would suit an experienced, organised, and meticulous Fleet Engineer or Chief Engineer who comes from a hands-on engineering background, with a proven track record of leadership, aspiring to leave their mark permanently within a well-established but rapidly growing organisation. What we need from you as our next Chief Engineer:
* First-hand leadership experience of embedding positive cultural change.
* A proven track record in managing people, processes and improving performance.
* Strong knowledge and a firm understanding of engineering within the bus industry.
* A sense of robustness, given you will cover multiple business units at different stages of their development in light of our expansion strategy – requiring you to lead on the standardisation of policy and procedures.
* Good financial acumen and sense of commerciality: you’ll be expected to identify efficiencies, challenge budget controls and our procurement approach.
* Experience of communicating with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, being able to demonstrate your influence in ensuring that standards and targets are achieved.
* Have a passion for safety and continuous improvement, as well as being conversant with statutory requirements.
* Fully conversant with DVSA regulations and HSE guidelines.
* Hold a Certificate of Professional Competence for Transport Managers (Passenger Transport).
* Flexibility and determination: you should be motivated to improve, and develop yourself and the team around you.
