West Yorkshire and Harrogate Local Maternity & Neonatal System (LMNS) is looking to recruit enthusiastic newly registered midwives to provide high quality, holistic midwifery care, sensitive to the needs of the woman and her family at one of the six hospital trusts within the LMNS. (Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and The Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust).
The post holder will work in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team in both the hospital and community settings, providing continuity of carer according to the local models of care. This includes partnership working with general practitioners, obstetricians, midwives, health visitors and all other agencies involved. To ensure that safe quality care is received by women and their families throughout the maternity pathway.
This exciting opportunity requires the post holder to complete the agreed WY&H LMNS preceptorship package with support and as part of their professional development and transition to Band 6.
Main duties of the job
During the preceptorship period the midwife will have the opportunity to provide care across the perinatal pathway in a variety of settings. It will help the post holder to identify their strengths and highlight the areas requiring further development for the benefit of the women you care for. This in turn will enable you to become a confident and competent midwife, practising in accordance with the NMC Code (2018) and give you the opportunity to prepare for your first NMC Revalidation in 3 years time.
Within each Trust the Preceptorship Lead Midwife will provide the post holder with ongoing support with any additional training needs throughout the programme. Every trust across the West Yorkshire and Harrogate LMNS aligns to the National Preceptorship Framework for Midwifery. In terms of timeframes to progress to a Band 6 - this will be dependent on individual progress, contracted hours, and will be decided in collaboration with you, your preceptor and line manager and reflect the Trust preceptorship programme you are working within.

Job Summary

Main Duties And Responsibilities
Clinical
* Provide safe, high-quality evidence based care throughout the maternity pathway.
* Ensure information is communicated in a clear and unbiased way to facilitate informed decision making.
In partnership with the woman / birthing person, the midwife assesses needs, plans implements and evaluates care on an individual basis, promoting equity, equality and considering diversity and rights.
Maintain contemporaneous documentation in accordance with NMC Code.
Liaise and work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team and other agencies, when complex needs are identified.
* Continuously assess risks and deviations from normal and ensure timely referral, intervention and escalation.
* Consider the diverse needs of women and their families and ensure the delivery of individualised plans of care.
* Participates in provision of public health information.
* Provide health/parent education either individually or in groups to maximise the benefit to families.
* Advocate for women's informed choice in the decision-making process regarding all aspects of their pregnancy birth and postnatal care.
Participates in departmental team meetings and other committees when necessary.
* Work flexibly across all maternity wards/settings as indicated by service needs.
* May be required to participate in on call rota where appropriate.
* Maintain compliance with Trust policies in relation to Infection Control to reduce HCAI.
* Communicates in a clear and unbiased manner with women and families and the multi-disciplinary team.
* Works within national and local guidelines in relation to midwifery practice.
* Undertakes all such reasonable other duties as may be required as part of the role.
* Escalates any concerns in relation to professional practice to relevant person/agency.
* Liaises with outside agencies to enhance individualised care for more complex situations such as safeguarding, domestic abuse or substance misuse.

Physical Effort
The post holder is required to have highly developed physical skills e.g. manual dexterity to perform abdominal palpation, vaginal examinations, taking blood samples, applying fetal scalp electrodes, performing episiotomies. Responding rapidly to emergency situations e.g. haemorrhage, neonatal resuscitation, where the ability to run to scene is required and bring appropriate equipment.
There is a daily requirement to undertake moderate physical activity for several short periods less than 20 minutes at a time e.g. transferring the mothers from bed to wheelchair/operating table to bed (using appropriate manual handling equipment). Assisting women into the lithotomy position for instrumental births and perineal suturing. Daily requirement to maintain awkward positions for less than 20 minutes at a time when supporting women giving birth in various positions including standing, squatting, all fours and in a birthing pool.
Mental Effort
Supporting women throughout the perinatal period requires psychological resilience and providing emotional and physical support.
When caring for a woman/birthing person, the midwife may be required to maintain frequent concentration, particularly during client examinations in clinic or while attending to a woman/birthing person in labour, as well as during daily tasks such as checking and calculating drugs or inputting data into the computer. The duration and intensity of concentration may be unpredictable.
The post holder will need to be aware of the need to practice self-care for emotional and physical wellbeing and access support when required. The WY&H LMNS understands that the transition from student to newly qualified midwife can be challenging and has a commitment to supporting you throughout this journey.
Emotional Effort
Directly provides emotional and psychological support to women during pregnancy, labour and postpartum - daily throughout shift. Involvement in obstetric emergencies leading to exposure to highly distressing situations which may be as much as once a week. These may include shoulder dystocia, birth asphyxia, postpartum haemorrhage.
Regular exposure to stressful situations varying in severity e.g. poor outcomes (unexpected transfer of babies to special care baby unit (SCBU), fetal abnormality, fetal or maternal death), supporting and caring for women in labouring having termination of pregnancy (TOP) for fetal abnormality, preparing baby for mortuary.
Working Conditions
The post holder is frequently exposed to challenging working conditions which includes exposure to bodily fluids, conflict management, shift work including nights, weekend, bank holidays and on call models.
Vaccinations
The WY&H LMNS encourages and supports staff to be vaccinated against flu, Hepatitis B and any other vaccinations deemed necessary.
