POSITION:
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Head of R&D to join our Research and Development department. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of software developers, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality software projects, and collaborating with other teams across the organization to meet business objectives. Reporting to the CTO, the Head of R&D will have a track record of success in leading software development teams, managing software development projects, and driving software development best practices. This is a hands-off position which will focus on leading and managing the work of the team members and taking responsibility for delivery of feature development.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Lead and manage multiple feature delivery teams consisting of software developers, QA Analysts and Software Engineers to deliver high-quality software projects on time and within budget
2. Develop and execute software development project plans, including defining project scope, milestones, and deliverables
3. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful project delivery, including working with product management, quality assurance, user experience, and other stakeholders
4. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and software development best practices, including agile development, continuous integration and deployment, and automated testing
5. Manage and prioritize feature team workload to ensure efficient use of resources
6. Ensure adherence to software development standards, policies and procedures
7. Hire, train, and mentor software development & QA team members
8. Hire and manage remote teams both in the UK and offshore
9. Provide regular status updates on project progress to stakeholders, including the senior leadership team
10. Participate in budget planning and resource allocation processes
11. Ensure line management of direct reports is carried out effectively, making sure that have monthly activity plans and a continuous professional development plan in place which mirrors and assists the company aspirations
12. Hold regular 1:1 progress meetings with direct reports and act as mentor
13. Setting individual objectives, carry out performance appraisals and career development of direct reports
14. Monitor feedback and perform root cause analysis on recurring issues.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
15. Proven experience managing and/or leading a software team
16. Extensive background experience in Software Development or QA
17. Experience and deep understanding of working in an Agile delivery team (preferably Scrum) is desirable
18. Good knowledge of software development best practice
19. Experience in designing and delivering presentations
20. Experience of coaching other members of staff
21. Experience of working with remote, offshore teams is an advantage.
22. Ability to work under own initiative and willing to take personal responsibility for issues
