There has never been a better time to join our Paediatric Critical Care team at the Great North Children's Hospital. With an expanding service and a plan for new Paediatric High Dependency with the initial opening of 2 beds, now is the time to join our team. We have 12 commissioned PICU beds and 2 PHDU beds.
The successful candidate will be able to prove a high level of achievement, motivation, and enthusiasm in their current role, with extensive experience in a children's intensive care unit. They will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the unique challenges of a PICU whilst remaining professional, resilient, optimistic, and resourceful.
We support our local children in the North East and Cumbria who require emergency treatment or are undergoing surgery requiring Intensive Care admission. Our PICU is a busy dynamic unit providing care for children with a variety of health care needs. Specialties include neurosurgery, neurology, trauma, oncology, BMT, and plastic surgery, as well as paediatric surgery, paediatric infectious diseases, and paediatric medicine.
Main duties of the job
The role will work seamlessly alongside the PICU Senior Nursing Team and the Great North Children's Hospital Matrons and will be supported by the Directorate Management Team. The team is very committed to ensuring a positive staff experience and sustaining our excellent staff wellbeing and retention strategy.
The PICU Band 6 role is about clinical excellence, leading your team, and managing your resources. Newcastle University Hospitals NHS Trust will provide an exciting and excellent environment in which to meet these goals.
Job responsibilities
* Support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse with professional accountability and standards, ensuring professional practices in line with the requirements of the NMC and the Trust.
* Support the development of junior staff or students ensuring appropriate supervision and assessment is available.
* To support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse, acting as a deputy when the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse is absent.
* Provide effective support and leadership to both staff, patients, and carers within the ward or department.
* Act as a role model, teacher, and supervisor for junior staff and students.
* Ensure systems are in place to provide the continuity of safe effective care for patients at all times.
* Be an effective member of the multi-disciplinary team.
Person Specification
KNOWLEDGE
* Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role.
* Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development.
* Understanding of professional accountability in a leadership role.
* Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context.
* Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding.
SKILLS
* Relevant clinical skills relating to the specialty e.g. IV drug administration, ECMO management.
EXPERIENCE
* Specialist qualification if relevant to role or previous experience.
* Relevant and recent clinical experience.
* Audit / research experience.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch).
* Current NMC registration.
* Diploma in a health-related subject, prepared to take degree level study.
* Degree in health-related subject.
