All Trusts in England must employ a Guardian of Safe Working (GoSW). The GoSW is an independent role responsible for protecting the safeguards for resident doctors as outlined in the Terms and Conditions of Service (2016) and must provide assurance to the Trust Board that doctors remain safe to carry out their clinical duties.
Main Duties of the Job
1. Act as the champion of safe working hours for doctors in approved training programmes and locally employed doctors to ensure that action is taken to ensure that the working hours within the Trust are safe.
2. Provide assurance to the Trust Board or equivalent body that trainee doctors are safely rostered and are working hours that are safe and in compliance with the TCS (2016).
3. Actively promote safe working practices and ensure good practices are shared within the organisation.
4. Advise and support clinical teams with highlighted areas of difficulties.
5. Chair the Resident Doctor Forum (RDF) where safety issues and improvements to resident doctors' working conditions can be discussed/addressed.
6. Attend the Joint Local Negotiating Consulting Committee (JLNCC).
7. Attend the resident doctors' induction to raise awareness of the role and the relevance of exception reports.
8. Attend relevant forums, such as Clinical Group Education Boards regarding exception reports.
9. Represent the Trust at regional and national Guardian of Safe Working events.

Knowledge and Qualifications
* Specialist knowledge of the requirements of TCS (2016) for doctors and dentists in training relating to safe working.
* Experience of involvement with exception reporting.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and as such, it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Salary: £53,755 to £60,504 per annum, pro rata.
